...Our Lady of the Angels, a $195 million, 11-story cathedral, was dedicated during a three-hour service that incorporated the many ethnic backgrounds of the community...

But outside, dozens of protesters decried the church's handling of priests accused of sexual abuse. A large papier-mâché effigy of Mahony held a sign saying: "Suffer the little children."...

Most of the $195 million to build the cathedral was raised through private donations. A 6,000-space mausoleum, built beneath the cathedral, along with a gift shop, restaurant, conference center and a 600-car parking garage should cover most expenses, Mahony said... CLICK

I don't see the new Cathedral as having any connection to the sex abuse scandal---but did they have to make it so *ugly*?

That + a few black tie events serving "angel food" cake @ $1,000 a pop! How long before the glow is gone and reality kicks in. It costs big bucks to maintain a complex of this magnitude.

If he's smart, he'll use the gift shop to sell t-shirts with his effigy. They should be big sellers!

You know what, the Dome here in St. Louis, whatever it's called this week, was $250 million.

Do you think if LA ever gets another football team....

Now let's not be so hasty. He's got 600 parking spaces and if he charges, say, $400 an hour to park, that's a cool $192 grand for a 5 day work week. Add, say, $33 grand for weekend parking (Mass and other extraneous events) and you have an enterprise grossing $225,000 a week.

Discounting maintainance, this baby pays for itself in 17 years. Mahoney is a financial genius.

Ah, yes. The "Taj Mahoney."

That place is so ugly, I'd understand if it caused any Catholics to convert to Mormonism.

Yes, they did. They can't help it; ugliness is in their nature. The innovators who attempt to implement the so-called "spirit of Vatican II" can't seem to produce anything but ugliness. Musical ugliness, linguistic ugliness, spiritual ugliness, moral ugliness, and in this instance architectural ugliness. Fr. Vosko strikes again...

Some can. Our local Priest sent his architects to look at German Cathedrals to see what a church should look like. It was my understanding that they had presented him with an initial 'concept' of a Mahoney-esque structure. THAT idea was quickly removed.

Our church at least LOOKS like a Church, not like a bank or Elks lodge.

I often wonder if all of these barns, stadiums and power plants they tell us are catholic churches are not just part of Gramsci's quiet revolution.

The costs of those gathering spaces, plus paying off the scandals;first under the guise of "hush money" and now responding to the lawsuits resembles the budget transfers of the social engineers.

Then think about the enormous amounts of money for payroll for the bloated chancery bureaucrats salaries, the salaries for all of the paid staff of "ministries" for so many parishes, the conferences, the synods, the "trainers" of the catechists, the updated textbooks for catholic school kids, the ever changing paper missalettes, the competing hymnals, the lobbyists to force all taspayers to support their "social justice" programs and travel expenses so they can take little trips to coordinate and collaborate on their plans. Most of all these monies go to folks, who are determined to bring us a new and changed chuch.

We pay them to destroy the Catholic Church. We have to work to support them,to destroy Christs'Church, something is very wrong. And isn't it just perfect, when they announce they have changed the essence, the substance of the Church,(the Triune God)they will have already bilked us into paying for structures that are "styled" to their liking, "temples of worship, temples of wisdom, temples of the mangods".

I'd better stop I am convincing myself and almost forgetting that I do believe there is an undercurrent of orthodoxy,Catholicism, rising up.We need to remember that in order to sustain the movement.I know that God is with us,as individuals, who know Him and call on Him and obey Him,but whether the entire Church in America and Western Civilization will survive depends a lot on our prayers and fasting and persistence as well as our ability to wake up the rest of the Catholics, and with God's help,we can.

Ever notice that most modern structures look like scaled up foam board models? I wonder why that is.

Maybe because they use foam-board scale models to show the idea :o)

BTW, the diocesan office has had a model of the Taj Mahoney on display at the Southern California Renewal Convention every year since 1999.

Me: "That's one UGLY building."

Priest: "It grows on you."

Me: "So does fungus, that doesn't mean it's anything good."

Ah yes, the obligatory gift shop. No church should be without one.
