I work in NYC and one of my business acquaintences lives across the street from the UN plaza. She told me that on 9-11-01 when her building was evacuated downtown, all the new york office drones were helping each other out. Younger people were supporting older people, if someone fell, he or she was helped up, etc.
My acquaintance got back to her apartment and saw the evacuation of the UN building. All the "smarter people" were trampling each other. If someone fell, helping them up seemed to be the furthest thing from their minds. They almost knocked over the cops who were there to help them evacuate.

somehow I am not surprised to hear about the "save me first" attitude of the U.N. in the face of attack (reminds me of the men who put on women's clothing to get onto the Titanic lifeboats)

They are on the front line.
