It's all about the party, not the country.

I don't understand how the DemocRATic Party gains from opposing this war.

I cannot fathom it either. Daschle's path is suicidal for his party. And he is not a stupid man... he is coy, conniving, and corrupt... does not make sense to me.

The democrat party doesn't stand to gain but Daschle has such tunnel vision he still thinks he needs to oppose Bush's every move in order to court his base, I guess. The stalling tactic to move the vote until after the elections is singularly a party move - he's trying to protect the dems from voicing their real opinions. Personally, I think a good share are opposed to the war.

They don't gain from opposing the war, and they know it. Their strategy hinges upon delaying the war until after the November elections. After that, they will go along with the president. They are terrified that, if we are already at war by Election Day, the country will rally around the president and take a step to the right. With the Senate majority only one meager (stolen) vote, and many races (such as New Jersey) very close, the dems are trying every tactic in their ample book to slow Bush down. The good news is, the tide of events won't wait for little Tommy Dasshole. I think we'll get our war and our senate majority back.
