Getting Snippy About It: I am Canadian. And if anybody asks me about it, it's a personal matter.

As noted in the November 20 CyberAlert, in moderating a November 18 TV panel program on the local ABC affiliate, the Dallas Morning News reported that Peter Jennings had the tables turned on him as he was hit with complaints about his September 11 on-air remarks. Since the affiliate, WFAA-TV, posted a RealPlayer file of the one-hour special, we’ve now had the opportunity to transcribe that portion of the show in which Jennings seemed befuddled that anyone could have objected to his demanding to know the location of President Bush just hours after the terrorist attacks.

The day after Ed Bark’s Dallas Morning News story ran, he followed up with another one recounting his interview with Jennings in which Jennings couldn’t understand why anyone would be concerned that the anchor of a major U.S. network’s prime newscast is not a U.S. citizen:

"That he hasn't become an American citizen is considered highly unpatriotic by some. Mr. Jennings, who was born 63 years ago in Toronto, didn't bristle when this was broached. ‘When passions are very high, there are a variety of interpretations around the country of what patriotism is,’ he said. ‘I am Canadian. And if anybody asks me about it, it's a personal matter. It has a lot to do with my family and my family's history and my kids. But I'm very curious to know why any of our backgrounds are an issue for people.’"

For an excerpt from his November 19 story about how Jennings was confronted during the WFAA-TV special, as well as a RealPlayer clip of World News Tonight showing a Dallas man telling Jennings, "Nobody likes you," go to: http://www.mrc.org/cyberalerts/2001/cyb20011120.asp#1

Can anybody translate the following Peter Jennings comment from the original Canadian:

JENNINGS: Somebody in the CNN newsroom, thank goodness, ran in and gave us this because it's a reminder to tell folks that you have to read -- when you read a story in the press, you want to read the story, because reporters are surrounding the quotes, and then you want to read the quotes.

Peter Jennings (1938- )

born in Toronto, Ontario

father, Charles, was a leading journalist, announcer, and later executive with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)

Gee Peter how much help did your father give you? Aren't you just like GW Bush? Could not of made it except for the help for your father?

at age nine, hosted a half-hour weekly children's show on CBC

became an interviewer for an Ontario radio station after dropping out of preparatory school, then joined the CBC as host of a public-affairs program.

in 1962 he became co-anchor of Canada's first national commercial-network newscast (CTV)

moved to New York in 1964 and became a correspondent for American Broadcasting Companies (ABC), then became anchor of ABC's nightly newscast (1965-67)

praised for his on-the-spot coverage and his documentary "Southern Accents: Northern Ghettos," however he returned to reporting in 1968, the move was attributed to his youth, inexperience, and Canadian background

in the early 1970's he was appointed head of the ABC News Middle East bureau in Beirut.

in 1971 Jennings received the National Headliner Award for his reporting on the civil war in Bangladesh his profile of Egyptian president a_Anwar al-Sadat earned him a Peabody Award in 1974

served briefly as Washington correspondent for ABC's "A.M. America" (1974-75), then went to London as the network's chief foreign correspondent

in London he co-anchored the nightly newscast "World News Tonight," and he was appointed sole anchor when the show moved to New York City in 1983

became known for his straightforward newscasting

his November 1990 interview with Saddam Hussein just before the Persian Gulf War was one of few granted to western reporters

I’m Canadian. I saw the link on Bourque and as a result checked out your forum. Let me add a little perspective and background to this story.

I’m in Edmonton, Alberta (look west, straight up from Montana). Oil (big time), ranching and farming are the bread and butter around here, with a healthy dash of bio-tech/ high tech thrown in for diversification. When you Alberta, think Texas with only 3.5 million people, without the accent and without Mexico. We’re the heartland of Canadian conservatism (although I’m a libertarian first).

If it’s any consolation Chretien, (or as some around here choose to call him Chretchev) is an embarrassment. By taking advantage of the fact that our constitution lacks appropriate checks and balances (i.e. no effective senate and no effective governmental branch separation) he has turned us into an elected dictatorship run out of his office. To continue power he has pitted region against region (think George III) and comments like this are directed more towards his power base in the greater Toronto area (“GTE”) than towards you. If you believe tilted polls, asking tilted questions by tilted pollsters, this appears to be the opinion in the power centers of GTE (as well as Ottawa, and Montreal) and being a self-serving political animal, living in the land void o’ checks and balances, this is who Chretien is pandering to…his power base.

In this part of the country (as well as in the editorial pages across the nation) Chretien’s words were largely jeered for what they were…garbage.

Speaking on a personal level I’m with the US 100%. Despite the fact that I’m an atheist let me paraphrase Ned Flanders by saying, “Godspeed big doodle”.

If anyone cares to look here is an essay I wrote on Chretien’s words,

Root Causes? The Left Can’t Handle the Truth.

Looking for an example of the “morally specious statements” former Prime minister Brian Mulroney accused Chretien of making? Try out this one.

"I think the western world is a bit too selfish and that there is a lot of resentment. I felt it when I dealt with the African file for the G8 summit. You know, the poor get relatively poorer all the time and the rich are getting richer all the time," – Mr. Chretien.

The truth eh Jean. You want the truth? You can’t handle (or obviously comprehend) the truth.

· In 1950 infant mortality rate in the undeveloped world was 1 in 5 today it is 1 in 18.
· According to the UN we have reduced poverty more in the past 50 years than we have in the past 500
· In 1970 more than 35 percent of the people in the developing world were starving, by 1996 this had dropped to 18%, the UN expects the figure to drop to 12% by 2010.
· In 1915 75% of the people in developing countries were illiterate, today that number is about 16%.
· In 1970 only 30% of the people in developing countries had access to clean drinking water, today that number is 80%.
· On average the developing world has increased the caloric intake from 2,462 calories to 2,663 calories over the past 10 years an 8% increase.

I won’t even bother getting into the fact that the terrorists were from upper-middle class families, educated and with privilege. I’ve yet to hear the left explain this little fact and I won’t hold my breath. Nor will I expand on the fact that there are poor people all over the world who aren’t Islamic fundamentalist who have thus far somehow avoided flying jetliners into large American buildings. Finally I won’t bother expounding on how insulting the notion that poverty causes mass murder is to the honest hard working poor people across the planet.

Oh right, but the west keeps getting richer. What is our alternative? Here, let me give you a little truth finding exercise. First, rank a bunch of countries out of a 100 on a scale of economic, personal and political freedom, then rank these same counties out of a 100 on a prosperity scale. Multiply these two little numbers together to get what I’ll call the freedom/prosperity index. Now near the top of this little list you’ll find the western world, Canada, the US, the UK, France with an average score of say 8100 (90x90) and at the bottom of that scale you’ll find, Iran, Iraq, and any country that ends with “stan” with an average score of say 225 (15x15). So what does this tell us?

Our freedom is what caused our prosperity, the freedom to learn, the freedom to challenge accepted ideas, the freedom to exercise that natural human desire to grow and improve. This is not a chicken and egg paradox, freedom definitely came first. To believe other wise would presumably to believe that woman’s liberation in the west came from government grants and not the suffragettes.

So when faced with the notion that we must decrease the gap between the rich and the poor of the planet we are faced with two options, we either export freedom or we export prosperity. The left of course thinks we can just export prosperity, we can take from the rich and give it to the poor and everything will be just great. This of course sounds all warm and fuzzy but unfortunately it doesn’t work. Giving money to nations without freedom is like throwing maidens in a well, an appeal to magic (pjo). Our experience thus far shows us that money thrown at people without freedom (and without the requisite responsibility) will be simply wasted by the thugs forcing their man made law over natural law. Sure lots of palaces will be built and nations without the technological capability will get a bunch of cool weapons, but the average everyday peon will remain just as poor. Mainly because he hasn’t been given the freedom necessary for the rest of the equation.

The other option is to export freedom, but how do we do this? I suppose we could take over the whole freakin’ place and give them Marshal plan redux. While it worked for Germany and Japan at least these countries had some of the necessary ingredients for industrial success prior to WWII whereas with the exception of oil money the middle east is a 7th century backwater. So how do we do it? How do we export freedom? Answer: we don’t.

Islam needs a Galileo, it needs a Muslim equivalent to the enlightenment, this kind of basic building block can’t be forced down from the west. I must come from the people challenging the wisdom of a religion and a culture that has failed to evolve with the rest of the world. If you’re looking for an excuse to feel guilty then blame the west as much as you’d like, it won’t change the fact terrorist actions can be placed firmly on the shoulders of a stagnant and oppressive society.

You remember when 9/11 occurred, there were some intellectuals in the country who were stomped on very heavily.

Point 1.) Jennings consideres himself an intellectual.

Point 2) Jennings was stomped on very heavily after his smarmy-@$$ed comments about Air Force One darting around the country.

Point 3.) Maybe we shouldn't label Jennings an intellectual...
