Governor to endorse Shallenburger [Kansas]

More than six weeks after the primary election, Gov. Bill Graves will endorse his party's nominee at a news conference this afternoon. "The governor will endorse us," said Bob Murray, a spokesman for Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim Shallenburger. "It was just a matter of time before it happened."

A joint news conference has been scheduled for 2 p.m. in Graves' Statehouse office.

Shallenburger, a conservative Republican who is also the state treasurer, won his party's nomination in the Aug. 6 primary. Since then, Graves, a moderate Republican, has repeatedly declined to make an endorsement.

The two Republicans met for an hour on Sept. 3 to work out their differences. By late last week, Graves said he wanted to endorse Shallenburger to help unify his party, but he wanted more than just a political reason. He said he was taking his time to consider some issues.

Still, he indicated he likely would make the endorsement. Graves said he had received e-mails from Republicans who urged him to endorse Shallenburger.

"They're just people who say, 'Governor, I didn't always agree with you, but I supported you and I'm a conservative. I want to see Tim Shallenburger elected and I believe you need to find a way to get on board,' " Graves said in an interview last week. "Well, there is some merit to that."

Murray said Wednesday that Shallenburger appreciated the governor's careful consideration of the endorsement.

"The governor and Tim agree on many more issues than they disagree on," Murray said. "I think the governor was very honest and truthful when he said he wanted to take his time rather than do a hasty, hollow endorsement. There's been a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes."

Murray also said the endorsement from Graves, who received the most votes of any gubernatorial candidate in state history in the 1998 election, is important.

"It's something that we had hoped for and felt confident that we would get," Murray said. "Bill Graves is a very popular governor. There are probably a lot of people who will take their lead based on what the governor does and says."

It would be a good idea to indicate the candidates' State in the headlines.

You're going to have to let go Mr. Graves. See ya.

Bob Murray, a spokesman for Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim Shallenburger.

Wasn't Bob Murray Graves spokesman as well?

A bigger question: Does this help or hurt Shallenburger? LOL

WOW! Cool! I take back all the mean things I've been saying about Graves the past couple of weeks.

I was one of the conservatives who e-mailed him, btw. I just couldn't get past the fact that I supported him all these years and it cost me a lot of important issues, yet he didn't want to support my candidate. Anyway, all water under the bridge now. I can forgive.

Isn't it ironic that these freaking RINOS have attempted to take over the Republican party and scream at the top of there lungs that the Conservatives should vote party first....

Then when the rolls are reversed watch as the POS play their power games, Disgusting.

Thanks for the ping. What do you guys think are Shallenburger's chances of winning. Last I heard he was trailing by 17 pts.

It looks like an uphill battle for Shallenburger, I'm sorry to say.

Graves endorsement will only help Shallenburger, but it is too little to late. I do not think that it will be enough to allow Shallenberger to make up the deficet in the polls.
I may well be wrong here in this analysis but I think that the Gov. race will be decided in the Wichita and KC areas. I would expect that Sibelius will really rake in the votes in these areas, as she is running as conserative/moderate Dem and the major media outlets will portray Tim as just to the right of Atilla the Hun.
I have seen little or no TV for Shallenburger. I do not watch mutch TV to begin with so that may skew my take a bit. I have seen quite a few ads for Sibeliuis and none for Shallenburger however. Time is of the essence here and Tim needs to be getting his mesage out to the public and right now if he is going to have any shot at beating Sibelius.
That is my .02 wowrth anyways.

Regards

yeah, but those polls are all taken in Wichita/KC/Lawrence. Remember the primaries? Shallenberger was supposed to come in 3rd. Besides, the KS media lies just like their big-city RAT brethren.

I remember after the primary they were saying that the Shallenburger campaign had sent most of its money in the primaries and wouldn't be ablt to counter Sibelius effectively. Looks as if they may have been right. Damn...Kansas is a conservative state and the fact that we may have a RAT for Governor is ridiculous.
