NC’s Governor Easley threatens local governments

A Wilmington newspaper is reporting that a top aide to Governor Mike Easley threatened loss of "...local projects dear to the New Hanover County Commissioners..." if "...they [the commissioners] were to win a lawsuit against the administration over money Gov. Mike Easley..." withheld from local governments to balance the budget.

The Wilmington Star says that John Merritt, a Senior Advisor for Policy and Communications for Easley, went on to say, "They [commissioners] are like a son getting mad at his father, who's lost his job, for not paying his allowance. Now, they're saying they'll sue the dad. There's a likelihood the father will throw the son out the house if he keeps that up."

I asked a local mayor whether it wouldn't make sense to set the local tax rate for utility franchise fees to 0% -- thus the state wouldn't be able to steal those tax monies from the cities, and the cities would be free to replace that money by other means without "raising" taxes.

The response was that the NC General Assembly had recently passed a law that essentially made this idea ILLEGAL - thus institutionalizing this theft of the local reibursement accounts.

I believe that a Republican-held House (if we had such) would have solid grounds to IMPEACH our governor for this.

..And a local radio guy corrected the guv's bad analogy: what's happening here is more like the son having a job, but his father goes to his employer to pick up the paychecks -- and dad keeps & spends them for his own "needs". My only change would be that dad is spending that money on the lottery!

True. But the analogy here is more similar to the vehicle inspection stickers we buy. I remember when it was proposed the State Guvnar said it would never go over $5.00 period. Well in some places its $65.00. WHO LIED? WHO DID IT? Lemme see. I think the make up of the State government was about the same as it is now. What party was that?

Sleazley is setting up quite a legacy for himself isn't he?....and after only 2 years in office no less.

.......the firm believes that the City of Raleigh will soon join the lawsuit, which will encourage other counties and cities to join. Now wouldn't this be priceless? ROFLMAO!!!!

According to Ramsey, the firm of Boyce & Isley is no stranger to suing Easley. They've done it two or three times before and won. The most famous case was the one in which Easley and the state lost to the tune of almost $1 billion and was, in part, the reason for current budget crisis.

I really LIKE this law firm Boyce & Isley, I may be shopping for a lawyer myself in the future, I'll have to keep them in mind.

The inspections have done so much good. Our air is cleaner and the vehicles are safer. Look how much money we've pumped to inspection stations, phone company, computer/test equipment manufacturers and the state. /sarcasm

Boyce & Isley are top notch and they have no problem suing this state when needed.

Dan Boyce was GOP nominee for Atty General in 2000.

Philip Isley was elected to the Raleigh City Council in 2001.

Yeah the senate too. I live in Cumberland County home of Senator Rand. The most partisian asswipe around. Liberal to the bone. If you were to look up asshole in the dictionary his face would be beside it. But hey he is a trial lawyer.
