The Palestinians were offered half of their own land, broken up into small pieces that could never have been economically independent.

The idea that the Camp David proposal was generous rather than insulting was one of Clinton's greatest lies.

Two points.

First, aside from Barak's offer there was Denis Ross' informal proposal to Arafat, which included territorial integrity. Ross indicated to Arafat that the US could press Israel to accept the proposal if Arafat considered it acceptable in principal. In return Arafat quit the talks. There is a thread substantiating this somewhere on FR; perhaps someone could post a link. Since that incident, the Palestinian Authority cannot claim that the lack of territorial integrity was the reason they quit.

Second, if the Palestinians could not reach a negotiated settlement they would be free to break off talks and wage a war for territory. Israel has done that in the past. However, there are rules of war. Terrorism is by definition a war crime. If the Palestinians wanted to fight for territory honorable, they should have declared statehood unilaterally on any territory they have physical control of, and fight for more. But they would have to do so with honest means: forming a regular army and striking against military targets.
