I read of a very interesting exchange between the Vedrine, the former French Foreign Minister and his Polish opposite number. Vedrine was babbling about how Poland should switch alliances from the US to France to which the Pole sneered, "And what if Russia should someday turn adventurous again ? Will there be Mirages in the sky to protect us ? We know there will be F16's."
Poland understands history very well. Nobody needs to tell them or the Hungarians for that matter that the only real security they could have in the event of a revitalized Russia pursuing its historic agenda in Central Europe lies in military alliance with the United States. They certainly are not going to be France's last ally in Eastern Europe like in 1939.
After France's reaction to Hitler, only a fool would depend on them in any type of alliance.
A French pledge to "cover you" with their military wouldn't be worth the paper it's written on.

Funny, being in NATO I thought we were one.
I think the French and Germs are aiming to upset NATO, probably in line with their plans for full Euro-Centralization, which they will collaborate to dominate.
One example of this thinking was the "EU Reaction force", a substitute for NATO, which didn't seem to catch on.
