Vietnam, A Personal Journey

Young woman travels to Vietnam and purchases US military dog tags in hopes of returning them to veterans or their family members.

Excerpt:

After researching and speaking with many Veterans, I have come to find a common thread amongst the intricate, confusing and complicated fabric in time. I found threads of pure "truth" in the expressions of some who had real difficulty. Not only while in the midst of war, but well after; with coming home and daily life. So much judgment, isolation, feeling misunderstood, or not understood at all. It seems what many really needed the most was so simple. Things like recognition, respect, love, honor, acceptance, and a safe space to share, talk, yell or cry. A place to be exclusively honest with other vets regarding the surreal sights no human should ever have to see, let alone keep to themselves. I was surprised to learn many never heard an honest "Thank You." How difficult to have the absence of parades (like the other war-time heroes had in their honor), no national stamp for their efforts, no programs to assist in their transition and all that was lost, and even the 3-syllable greeting "Welcome Home" seems to have been said much too infrequently.

With all this, and wicked memories tatooed to their minds, recurrently chasing sanity, it is not surprising to me that there may have been residual effects and difficulty for some of our Heroes of Vietnam still with us today. It is in part, for this reason that I found myself wanting to do "something" for the Veterans of Vietnam. To, somehow, help this forgotten generation of a very volatile time.

Please let me know if you want ON or OFF my General Interest ping list!. . .don't be shy.

WARNING!!!!

Sorry to rain on the lovefest, but these dogtags are available all over Vietnam. They are made locally and sold to tourists. The chance of these being actually from US soldiers is very small. I have been to Vietnam and these types of things are everywhere.

Has anyone else heard of the warning put out some time ago NOT to buy dog tags in Vietnam? Seems they were manufacturing them for the tourists.

"Local entrepreneurs long ago jumped on the war memorabilia bandwagon. Saigon street artists started the craze by crafting toy tanks and planes from scraps of Budweiser and Coca Cola cans. Dog tags and jewelry made from bullet shells soon followed. For years, one of Vietnam's major exports must have been fake Zippo lighters, copies of those carried by American GIs, inscribed with lewd or lonely messages of desperation. Put all the tourists with "authentic" army-issue Zippo lighters in a line and it would easily surpass one comprised of the mass of people claiming genuine chunks of the Berlin Wall."

Photo taken at the Cham ruins at My Son, about 40 clicks WSW of Danang, in a basin bordered north by Cats Tooth Mountain.

I encourage all Vietnam veterans to go back to Vietnam and spread the gospel of capitalism. Dog tags made while you wait.

Thanks for the ping. What a wonderful story and a wonderful girl. I hate sitting here at work with tears in my eyes!

I pray each one of these tags is returned to the waiting families.
