Washington -- Republican lawmakers on Wednesday offered what they said was a compromise on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

In exchange for opening the 1.5 million-acre coastal plain to the oil industry, the rest of the refuge in Northeast Alaska would be forever protected from development.

ANWR drilling keeps coming up for discussion and keeps going nowhere. Nevertheless, a lot of people are hanging around Fairbanks hoping that there will be another oil boom.

A couple of politicians are talking up Minto Flats natural gas, which might be of local interest but sure would take the town's attention off the future Prudhoe Bay natural gas pipeline as far as Fairbanks is concerned. Fairbanks is central to the proposed Prudhoe Bay natural gas pipeline southern route, BTW, otherwise Alaska would let them build the northern route.

I heard a few months back that the conference committee that was dealing with energy had a pro-ANWR Democrat senator on it. All of the GOP Senators on that conference committee were pro-ANWR as well, ensuring that a majority of the conference was pro-ANWR.

Anyone know why it wasn't re-introduced in the conference, being that it had the votes?

Same here in the Anchorage area. Who knows, It might make a difference having Gov. Murkowski behind it. I seriously doubt if Knowles was really a supporter. He was just paying lip service.

As far as Murkowski is concerned, he is running for governor mainly because the last Republican governor's race was a total fiasco. They think they got it bad in New Jersey?

It's going to be Frank in Juneau, there is just no way of stopping it. Fran Ulmer doesn't stand a chance against him. The really unfornuate part of it all is that Frank will remain a Senator until he takes the governor's oath of office, at which point the senate seat becomes vacant and the new governor gets to pick his own replacement. Normally, this would be alright, it is just that Frank has refused to identify even one potential choice for the job. Even a list of 5-10 would be could.

As I see it, I am not only voting for the next governor, but also for the next senator with a single vote and I damn sure want to know who I am voting for. Tony Knowles will no doubt be the demo candidate for the senate in the next election, and we need to make sure we have someone who can beat him.

As a note on the side, Fraank has said the reason he is running for the office is so that we have someone who will work closely with those in DC. To see Young suggest that the Governor of Alaska could and should shut down the pipeline raises a few flags. I wonder what the fed would do then?
