Last I saw a week or two ago, it was 46/44 I believe, favoring Cornyn.

I'm seeing those numbers too but I'm having a bit of a hard time believing them. This state is not going to send a liberal to the Senate. (But I'm going to slip Cornyn a coupla bucks to help make sure)

If Kirk is somehow elected after all this, Texas deserves what we get.

I suspect in the next week the race baiting will really start cranking up. Both Sanchez and Kirk with the help of the Rats in Washington are going to stop at nothing to win Texas so they can taunt President Bush. I am sure that the NAALCP Byrd ad from the 2000 election is going to be nothing to compare to what Sanchez and his ilk are going to start doing on spainish radio.

what's the latest poll #'s on this race?

Most media polls have Cornyn up by about 6 points. The campaign polls depend on which candidate did them. Cornyn's have him up by more, Kirk's have it dead even.

It's all a little too close for comfort, and the media is going out of their way to hide Kirk's RADICAL ISLAMIC AND LEFTIST ANTI-MILITARY TIES while projecting an image of moderation.

In short, the word needs to be spread that Kirk is a Barbara Lee-supporting left wing anti-military wacko with extensive Cynthia McKinney style ties to radical islamics.

Kirk has a problem. He needs to appeal to moderate whites in the state AND fire up his black base.

It's going to be hard to do both.

He's going to lose.

"If Kirk is somehow elected after all this, Texas deserves what we get."

Ain't that the truth. Good heavens, please don't let this happen. I somehow don't believe it will. I believe my native land will stay with the party of Reagan and Bush.

Check out the latest nonsense about Kirk in Newsweek. There is an active and intentional effort in the "mainstream" media to portray Kirk as a moderate, pro-business, pro-military type of Democrat.

It's precisely the image Kirk wants because he knows that its the ONLY way he could ever win Texas.

Excerpt from newsweek. My corrections of factual inaccuracies are included: http://www.msnbc.com/news/813573.asp?cp1=1

"But that?s not the Johnsonian ?come, let us reason together? tone in, say, the pivotal U.S. Senate race in Texas, the foundation and anchor of the modern GOP. There, Rove is out to destroy Ron Kirk, the popular, politically moderate and business-friendly Democratic mayor of Dallas. [NOTE: HE IS NO LONGER MAYOR OF DALLAS, AND IF RON KIRK'S A MODERATE THEN BOB TORICELLI IS AN HONEST MAN] The task for Bush?s longtime friend and handpicked GOP candidate (Attorney General John Cornyn): don?t allow the affable Kirk to claim philosophical or political membership in Club Bush. And while you?re at it, make him lose his cool?a precious commodity for any candidate.

The best way to do both: attack him on national security. Last August?back when Enron and WorldCom were news [NOTE: THE DEMS HAVE BEEN TRYING TO MAKE ENRON NEWS FOR OVER A YEAR NOW WITH VIRTUALLY NO SUCCESS-IT WAS NEVER THE TOP NEWS STORY BACK IN AUGUST]?the GOP?s senatorial committee began bombing Kirk, among others, with ads denouncing their ties to the Council for a Livable World, which champions cuts in defense spending. Cornyn followed up by accusing Kirk of ?foot-dragging? and, by implication, of lacking the proper patriotic zeal. The attacks had their desired effect: Kirk blew up, at a raucous meeting with black and Hispanic war veterans in San Antonio. ?I am ready to stand behind this president and go to war,? Kirk declared. But he didn?t stop there. It would, after all, not be the children of Cornyn?s wealthy friends who would fight this war, he said. ?I wonder how excited they?d be if I get to the United States Senate and put forth a resolution that says the next time we go to war, the first 500,000 kids have to come from families who earn $1 million or more?? Cornyn solemnly denounced the remarks as divisively race-conscious, and Kirk eventually was forced to express ?regret? at having made them. [NOTE: KIRK NEVER SAID HE REGRETTED THE EXTREME POSITION HE TOOK - HE SAID HE REGRETTED HIS CHOICE OF WORDS AND NOTHING MORE AND STUCK TO HIS POSITION OUT OF "CONCERN" FOR THE PEOPLE ON THE FRONT LINES]"

The sad thing is that a lot of Republicans will vote for Kirk based on name recognition alone, and the fact that the media portrayed him as a "moderate" mayor.

That may be true in the Dallas area, but the rest of the state never heard of him before this year. I don't think many Republicans are really going to vote for an inner-city mayor over John Cornyn.

The Democrats are trying to up the percentage in Hispanic/Black turnout to around 35% thus lowering the numbers Kirk will need from the Anglos? I think the numbers normally run around 27% for the Hispanic/Black (15/12) turnout... I read an article that stated if the historical trend is what happens then Kirk needs about 35% in the Anglo vote. That will be hard to accomplish, IMO.

I agree completely, and in a fair world, Kirk's campaign would be crashing and burning right now.

Unfortunately he's got one big factor pulling for him that's designed to fulfill that goal of appealing to moderates. It's called the "mainstream" news media.

Kirk is their darling and he'll be known as a "moderate" in every ounce of press coverage he gets as long as he wants it. It could matter less who he affiliates himself with and what kind of anti-american radical nonsense he spews, because the media's decided that conflicts with the "moderate" image of Kirk they want to project.

Look at the coverage so far to see what I mean.

1. Kirk blows up at a rally and proposes dividing the military by income class and race. It's a one day story plus a second report that Kirk "regretted" what he said. The media hasn't touched it since.

2. Kirk's campaign is found to be employing a radical islamic activist with ties to John Walker Lindh. The story has appeared all over conservative publications for months, but how many "mainstream" sources have carried it? ONE. The Austin American Statesman in a small blurb about an email flap.

3. Kirk fundraises in California with a radical anti-military group and with Barbara Lee. The "mainstream" media carefulyneglects to mention that they're hosting his fundraisers and only says that Kirk's appearing at an event in San Francisco.

4. Kirk recieved tons of radical islamic cash. Again, right wing sources carry the story but not one regular newspaper. They don't hesitate for a second to mention Cornyn's donations years ago from Ken Lay in almost every single article they write about this race.

The double standard is simply apalling.

But we can win in spite of it. The coverage of the Bush Campaign 2000 by the Houston Chronicle had me spitting nails. They assigned a Bush-hating reporter to his campaign, and did their best to portray Bush as stupid and incompetent.

Any minor slip of the tongue in any speech was prominently covered as proof that Bush couldn't even talk. It was so patently biased that it was painful to read.

In spite of that, Bush carried Harris County, home of the nation's fourth largest city.
