Not only should there be an automatic death penalty for anyone convicted of murdering a child, the courts should expedite the trial and appeals process such that the time from arrest to execution is measured in months, not years. Furthermore, the clincher, the trial-stopper if you will, should be DNA evidence (and any cops planting such evidence should in fairness also face mandatory death).

Actually, I would prefer something like this: quick trial, wait ten minutes for additional evidence, a quick appeal, then once that is denied, a short walk out from the back of the court house to a table to be sprayed with wasp alarm pheremone, then over to the nearest yellowjacket colony and tie them to a tree. Death should occur in an hour or so from invenomation. Heck, televise it and put it on PPV, and give the proceeds to the victim's survivors.
