I was at a gas station on the Italian autostrada when the first jet hit the Twin Towers. There is nothing more frustrating than having your country under attack and watching the events unfold in real time in a foreign language on a portable TV in a foreign gas station. Frustration quickly gave way to concern about relatives and loved ones back home, which in turn gave way to a fierce desire for vengeance, for divine retribution of Old Testament proportions.
The Europeans did behave decently--for about two weeks. There were some very nice memorial services that were quite moving in their heartfelt sincerity. But always there were comments made in passing to the effect that "We hope America won't use 9/11 as an excuse for military action."
When it became clear that America was indeed going to engage in military action, the pundits, pinkos and politicians of Europe started in with the usual anti-American rhetoric. Expressions of sympathy for a grieving America were quickly replaced with denunciations of an America that is war mongering, imperialistic and beholden to Zionism.
Then Europe's worst fears came true. The mighty Taliban fell so quickly you would have thought they were French. And even worse, there, for all the world to see on Red Ted Turner and Hanoi Jane's CNN, were live shots of Muslims in the streets of Kabul cheering American soldiers as liberators. Even Christiane Amanpour had to admit that the burqa-clad women of Afghanistan were almost as oppressed as the female tenured professors in Columbia University's English Department........
