New poll shows Senate race tight [NH; also Gov race, NH-01, NH-02]

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) A poll published Saturday said New Hampshire's U.S. Senate race is much closer than a different poll two days earlier indicated.

The new Research 2000 poll had Republican John E. Sununu up by 4 percentage points over Democrat Jeanne Shaheen. An American Research Group poll released Thursday had Sununu ahead by 21 points.

Pollster Del Ali said Smith write-ins could mean trouble for Sununu

I don't think the write-ins will turn out to be a significant factor and would be suprised if they amount to even 1%. How many people are going to bother doing it, particularly understanding that in doing so they are only helping to elect Shaheen?

Though ''others'' were lumped together, lame-duck Republican Sen. Bob Smith undoubtedly was the choice of some of those polled.

I believe the only other candidate on the ballot is the Libertarian, Ken Blevens. I would doubt he would get more than 2% of the vote, if that, so Smith must be getting at least 2% in this poll.

Here is their poll for the presidential election. Their state by state numbers look pretty good overall. I think the poll is reliable.

New Hampshire 

- Gore, 46 percent 

- Bush, 42 percent 

- Nader, 2 percent 

- Buchanan, 1 percent

The actual vote totals in 2000 were 273,559 for Bush, 266,348 for Gore, 22,198 for Nader, and a few thousand for other candidates. That works out to:

Bush 48.2%
Gore 47.0%
Nader 3.9%.

The poll underestimated Bush's support and Nader's support--between the poll and the actual election, the media was hammering Bush over the 1976 DUI story, and the Democrats were pressuring Nader supporters to vote for Gore.

Bob Smith might be able to persuade some of his followers to vote for Sununu, but maybe he doesn't care if the Democrats retain control of the Senate.

Well the poll outfit's numbers state by state were as good as anybody's. I didn't see a consistent Dem bias.
