Was it an overcharged hate crime or a political payoff?
That's the question being raised in the wake of San Francisco District Attorney Terence Hallinan's decision last week to plead out a felony assault and hate crime case against the grandson of a very influential former state labor leader.

This whole "hate crime" thing stinks! It's just an mechanism for punishing people for their race.
(By the way, this guy Pil is a total piece of work. Ran a huge scam for major cash and then got off pretty much with a wrist-slap after making up a lot of bull about how the oppression he has suffered caused him to do it all.)
Photographs taken shortly after the alleged attack reveal the 27-year-old Medvedev's left eye was blackened and sealed shut, and his face swollen and bloodied. He also suffered broken ribs and cuts and scrapes on the lower body as a result of being dragged.
Pil also suffered scrapes to the lower body, and a punch to the face smashed his glasses. He complains of constant chest pains and fears he, too, may have broken ribs.
Oh, btw, Medvedev is 5-ft-8, 142 lb.
"Pil then grabbed Henning, wrestled him to the ground and called out to his wife -- who was inside -- to call the cops."
Heck, it sounds like the "Rabbi of Steel" to me! Anyway, there is obviously a big discrepency between the initially-posted version and the one you subsequently located. As I said, I was replying to the original post.
There is a lot more to all this, ry. I know Terrence Hallinan. I grew up with him. He's as leftist as they come. So was his father. There is no way he's going to seriously prosecute the son of a labor leftie in an attack on two orthodox Jews. Never gonna happen.
Prediction: Pil and Medvedev will slaughter Henning in civil court. Henning will also lose his license to practice. He has a history of past violent episodes and a jury will crucify him -- even if Hallinan won't lay a glove on him.
And sure "Kayo" is a well-pickled commie dingbat but then this is S.F. we're talking about. Heck, I live in the Mission District and have to deal daily with the scum our crusading D.A. chooses to allow to roam free.
Still, seven felony charges is an overcharge no matter how you slice it.
And, yes, Halinan is extremely selective about which groups and idealogues he will prosecute. The man is every bit as shameless as Mayor Brown.
