WASH: Taft-Hartley Act. (ORDERED)
TBO ^ | 10/8/02

Posted on 10/08/2002 10:26:17 AM PDT by Tumbleweed_Connection

Bush decided to order the Justice Department to seek the injunction after board of inquiry hand-picked by the White House reported that the two-week-old labor standoff has no chance of ending soon, said two administration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The board's brief report does not go into detail about the economic and national security impact of the shutdown, but it does hold out little hope for a resolution of the conflict, said one of the sources.

The board's brief report does not go into detail about the economic and national security impact of the shutdown,

The real threat to economic stability and national security stems from our dependence on so much being imported through a handful of ports. Our Government should be encouraging domestic production of these goods, rather than implementing policies that drive business offshore.

Can't have a strike or a lockout keeping her hubby from making money.

I'm very sure Bush has a plan to handle that.

I'll bet that he will put this as a matter of a dispute that is catching a lot of farmers and small businessmen in the little. In other words, both the port authorities AND the union were acting like little children and in the process hurting a lot of the little people across the country - heck, he now can say that his action will make sure that children get their Christmas presents.

Who is going to oppose making sure that the kiddies get their Christmas presents?

It's all in how he MARKETS the decision he has made. Little different from marketing Coca-Cola or Pepsi, really.

What other option did Bush have? What would the results have been if he stayed out of it? Likewise, what do you expect now that he has intervened?

The ACLU. Giving children CHRISTMAS off from school to open presents is state endorsement of Christianity :o)

You want Exhibit A as to why companies go offshore, look at the unions themselves.

They are pricing labor out of the market of American businesses. There is only one of two options at that point. Either American business goes offshore, or they look elsewhere for employees.

This is a great issue to slam and corner the Democrats when discussing around the watercooler. The ILWA has been claiming that since it was a lockout by the evil port owners, all they want to do is get back to work. So now Bush is granting their wishes. Yet watch how the Dems howl about Bush being anti-union. Further, the Dems are crying about Bush not paying attention to the economy, and the media has been running stories of how the strike is impacting the economy and causing layoffs. So the Dems are once again arguing both sides of the issue, heads Bush loses, tails Bush loses.

Now point out how this is just another example of Dems being hypocrites and politicizing the issue. Note that it is just like what they did with Iraq, where they demanded that Bush consult with Congress, go to the UN, and provide more proof, and now that he has, they complain that he is dragging this out to politicize it. But instead it is the Dems who are politicizing both issues, playing either side of the coin.

Last night, a union leader and a management negotiator were on Kudlow & Kramer. The union leader (last name Ponce de Leon) said that money is not the issue. Technology is the issue.

Can you believe these guys are fighting the replacement of clipboards with bar code scanners, even after they have been assured that there will be no loss of current jobs? In fact, the mgmt rep said that they expect volume at the west coast ports to increase substantially, resulting in more jobs.

I've noticed an interesting trend here. When people go to criticize the $100 million mansions of crooked CEO's and CFO's then the routine response is "you're just jealous". When people go to criticize the incomes of the union dockworkers then people refer to the dockworkers in ways that imply that they are worthless greedy pigs, such as "$120k isn't enough, whine whine whine". It's not just you, there are many who have made similar comments.

What I'm confused about is why the argument "you're just jealous" applies to the incomes of crooked CEO's and CFO's, yet it doesn't apply to the incomes of dockworkers. If the argument about CEO incomes is commonly accepted on FreeRepublic, then why can't I reply to your comment "Oh, you're just jealous"?

I've seen some comment about how doctors in California only make $40-$50k a year, yet these dockworkers make $120k a year. Maybe the problem is that the doctors are underpaid? I know that I wouldn't go to college for eight years, then have to spend more years as an intern, working twenty hours days week after week, all for 40 or 50k a year in a state where a starter home costs $300k or more. Forget that.

Might I offer one thought? The historical fact is that these dockworkers FOUGHT for their union, they had actual battles with strikebreakers and thugs where real people died. After the dust settled they worked out something that gave them some real wealth in return for their labor. In other words, they staked out a claim, fought for it, and have reaped the rewards. Isn't that a large part of what being an American is all about?

With "WHINESTEIN" begging Bush to stop the lockout, The REATS won't be running a "UNION BUSTER" crusade against him anyway.

Never heard that said about crooked CEOs or CFOs.

As for the union, try doing something that displeases the ILWA sometime, and let us know how long you're still breathing afterwards.
