Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?
myself | 10-15-02 | CJ Wolf

Yesterday before the Home Depot killing my brother was complaining of the canceled football practices, games and school precautions and ended it with..."I guess when I was a kid we worried about getting nuked."

This was my response: Ah the simpler times...I wonder if Washington worried about getting scalped as a youngster.

Well, in my opinion this reaction of fear is panic and just plain sad.

People around here still worry about the old fashioned nukes. Now they also can worry about the smaller suitcase nukes, kidnappers, bio warfare, our mail, snipers, bombs, drunk drivers, cell phone radiation, listeria, child molesters, malaria, SUVs rollovers, west nile and road rage. Please take a moment to replace your smoke detector batteries.

This is not new but one thing that is for certain about life is that something, somewhere is always out to get you and death never comes as expected. A hard pretzel lodged in the throat or a thrown hand grenade in a bar is equally deadly.

For the latest (our sniper) it appears that no one has a good handle on how to react, but sitting on our collective asses cowering in the basement, scaring our kids out of playtime and waiting for the endtime is a waste of the nowtime and downright un-American, besides we'd all end up sick with radon poisoning.

Drivebys and gangland shootings had never shut down a game of hoops in the ghetto, so why do you let it happen here? Who is making those decisions for us? I am afraid that we here look like cowards.

Carpe Diem! I'm going to take my kids and dog out for a walk as it's a nice autumn day. I will be on the lookout for Injuns as always.

I will not let fear ruin my day. Today after preschool my four year old asked me what a sniper is. What's my response?

I have a good friend as well as family members in the area, one of them a cousin with young children. I'd rather have them stay safe than tempt fate.

Someone on FNC said that if you do walk around, do it in a zig zag pattern.

( I know this isn't a funny situation, but that mental image.......... nevermind)

I'm in the area with my family, tempting fate by walking down my flight of stairs each morning. That's how my grand-dad died. Does it scare me, do I want to live in a rambler, change my life sytle and avoid all stairs. No.

Isaiah 41:10. "So do not fear for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Fear is the enemy of all free people.

One can cower in fear or one can live as they wish. No matter what death comes to us all. I know I will not live forever and even though I do not live in the area I have relations who live in Fall's Church, VA and others in Maryland not far North of Montgomery County.

I will not criticise those who change their lives for safety but they should consider that every action or inaction has risks.

Stay well - Stay safe - Stay armed - Yorktown

And what happens if they grow up and decide that this is a
good life strategy? Wo be onto them and their lives if they live under such a
philosophy. Woe onto the country if
no one thinks freedom is worth tempting fate, that it's better to stay "safe".

I would imagine walking around like the UPS character on Mad TV would do the trick.

Well, if they're dead, they won't have a chance to grow up now will they? But that's their choice. If you choose to do something different, more power to you.

You can do what you want. If my friend and family decide that staying indoors may well save their lives, that's their choice. In fact, you can be the person who volunteers to pump their gas, go to the supermarket for them, pick up a few items at Home Depot. It's just a simple act of charity, after all, and I'm sure you'd be happy to do so.

I was at home depot yesterday picking up some mums and halloween decorations. Let me know if they need anything. I'll be sure to share my kids trick-or-treat haul with them as well.

No problem. It's sincere too. I like what President Bush said on this.

President Bush said the "cold-blooded" attacks have made him sick to his stomach. "I weep for those who have lost their loved ones," he said. "The idea of moms taking their kids to school and sheltering them from a potential sniper attack is not the America that I know."

sneaky and told he the police are looking for him so they
can make him stop.

At first, I was going to say of course. We do that sort of stuff all the time for the elderly. I would still probably still do it for the elderly. But not for the average Joe or Jane. I'd entice them out of their car and out of their fear. I'd cheerlead their growing a spine. I'd stand next to them as they pumped but I don't think I would pump for them because that doesn't do them any long term good.

Pump gas for a person and you help them today. Help them to overcome their fear and you've really done something. I just don't think it's a good idea to fascilitate people's unreasonable fears. We all need to be brave in order to protect our freedom.
