[history]
SACRAMENTO, Calif.(AP) - La Jolla poet Quincy Troupe resigned his post as California's first official poet laureate Friday after four months, announcing he had falsified information on his resume for the post.
Troupe, appointed June 11 by Gov. Gray Davis, stated in his resignation letter: "I deeply regret my ill-advised decision to include inaccurate information on my curriculum vitae. While I attended Grumbling College, I never earned a college degree."

Ouch!
Grumbling College :-?
How about trying MumbledyPeg Tech next time?
Better embellish my resume and send it in.
I can be pretty poetic, if provoked ;-)

Grambling College? (Now Grambling State University.) Maybe the poor fellow can't spell.

Having been named poet laureate of the state of California was one of the high points in my career. Now thath's just plain sad...

Just look at it this way: the dude exercised his poetic license!

The reason such a big deal is being made of his non-degree, is that the educational system is desperate for proof that degrees mean something. Except for being like a union card, degrees are worth very little.
Just as there was once a right-to-work movement to break the stranglehold of unions on labor, there should be another movement to prevent degrees from being a requirement for ANY job in the land.

La Jolla poet Quincy Troupe resigned his post as California's first official poet laureate Friday after four months, ..... Troupe, appointed June 11 by Gov. Gray Davis, ... the discrepancy arose during a routine background check for Troupe's confirmation by the state Senate. Gee, maybe they should do the background check and senate confirmation BEFORE they give someone the position (and pay them for it)??

A degree should absolutely DISQUALIFY people for at least SOME important jobs. I'd love to see a technical job advertised somewhere, where LACK of a degree is a requirement. There must be at least one out there, right now.

degrees are worth very little. So true...BUT telling the truth about them means everything...

BTTP.
And bingo for Master's Degree's . In my 20+ years in manufacturing, I have never seen anything that will make a bright person get stupid more than attaining a MBA. I honestly believe that the probability of a company to achieve success, is based on the number of MBA's in their company structure. The more MBA's , more likely for failure.

California needs a poet laureat
Like I need a hole in my head
That being said
Mr. Quincy Troupe
Who stepped in the poop
When he lied on his credentials
Said, "But I was just being presidential
Alas fair California
Will have to get by
With prose and not poesies
From poets who lie
But why, tell me why
Do California's such as I
Or him or her, he or she or genders undefined
Pass laurels to mountebanks and phonies and frauds
And treat good-for-nothings
As heros and gods
And who was the bone-head who selected this fake
This cheater, this bounder
This rascal and rake
Who spent my money?
Who tell me who?
He, she or it should lose his job
Just like Quicy Troupe

What does a college resume have to do with anything? To be a great poet, you write great poetry. I don't understand this whole concept.
Do you see any computer programmers resigning their positions because the brilliant code they wrote was self taught, and they didn't go to the University to learn it.
The world is spinning too fast, and I want to get off.

I couldn't care less about his resume. Why does any state need a poet laureate? Show of hands...have any of you whose states have poet laureates either 1)knew they existed or 2) read any poems they have produced in that capacity?

So a poet had to resign from a worthless position because his resume said he got a degree from a worthless college when in fact he didn't even have his worthless degree?
To: L`enn
You got that right, especially Harvard MBA's. OTOH, My company does retained search at the CEO, director level, and for most jobs a degree is required in the disipline that the entitiy is invloved in. The only degree that goes in the round file immedialtely is an LLB.
A degree is third on the list of predictors of success on the job. the first is cognitive ability, and the second is track record.

Grumbling College? Is that next door to Upset University?
To: NormsRevenge
Gray Davis picked Troupe, 62, from three finalists for the position, which includes a $10,000 honorarium to give readings across the state and raise the profile of poetry among school children.

"Just as there was once a right-to-work movement to break the stranglehold of unions on labor, there should be another movement to prevent degrees from being a requirement for ANY job in the land."Not that I disagree with your premise. I think degrees are overrated too. Especially when you look around and see all the absolute morons that somehow managed to aquire one.
I am courious as to how you would "prevent degrees from being a requirement for any job" without totally trampling employers rights to hire whoever they please? The government tried that with 'affirmative action'. As you can see, that didn't turn out so well.

A college degree is neither an indication of intelligence, nor is it proof of acquired knowledge. It is a certification that an individual can set a goal for himself, and follow through to that goal's achievement. The significance of that achievement varies from the impressive to the trivial, depending on the field of study.
To: NormsRevenge
I'm sure this guy was a no-talent hack anyways, but why would a poet need to pad his resume with false acedemic credits? Shouldn't the poet laureate be picked on the merits of their poetry? I guess you need to prove you had the correct indoctrination.
