Delivering a Touch of Home

.

.

A Touch of Home

.

This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.

Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.

Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.

This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.

Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.

We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.

So, to the men and women who answered the call,
in both times of war and peace, thank you.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Aeronaut is so kind to fly us to
North Dakota today.

North Dakota is a State of
broad plateaus rimmed by majestic
buttes and ridges, sculpted by wind
and sudden rain. This is a big country
with clean fresh air, wide-open spaces,
rolling prairies, panoramic sunsets,
and sun-drenched sky.

We are in luck there was some rain
before we arrived and now we see
a beautiful rainbow in the Badlands.

Pembina Gorge in Northeastern North Dakota

Lush and green scenery as we move on
taking the trail to Knife River Indian Village

Once as many as 60 million bison roamed
over one-third of the entire land mass of
North America. It was not unusual for a
herd to contain four million animals, and
cover an area fifty miles long and twenty
miles wide.

North Dakota Badlands show us the
wonders of God’s creation as well.

The International Peace Garden overflows
with flowers on this fall day.

I hope he is not here but the name
of this lake is Devils Lake State Park

A wonderful author Louis L'Amour
His home, for the first fifteen years of his life,
was Jamestown, North Dakota, a medium
sized farming community situated in the
valley where Pipestem Creek flows into
the James River.

Since his death in June of 1988
Bantam Books has continued
to release the works of Louis L'Amour.

The State flower is beautiful.
The Wild Prairie Rose grows along roadsides
in pastures, and in native meadows.

The State Dance is the Square Dance.
The 1995 Legislative Assembly designated
the square dance the official American
folk dance of North Dakota.

Dosado do your partners

Every State has some old laws on the books
That are funny to hear about. How about
These for North Dakota.

In Fargo, one may be jailed for wearing a hat
while dancing, or even for wearing a hat to
a function where dancing is taking place.

It is illegal to lie down and fall asleep
with your shoes on.

It is illegal to serve beer and pretzels at
the same time in any bar, club, or restaurant.

For a late afternoon fun and relaxation the
Canteeneers go sailing on Lake Sakakawea

A fun trip and a relaxing day for all
traveling with the Canteeners on a
day of Liberty R&R to the beautiful
State of North Dakota is always special.
As we leave we see the sun setting and
thank you Aeronaut for another great
flight you have given us.

Tribute To HEROES

.

While the dogtag is used to provide information on an individual serviceman,
I also believe that the chain which holds them represents a connection to all
servicemen, no matter where you served, how you served or when you served.

.

The Minuteman in 1776 has a connection to the soldier fighting in Afghanistan today.
That connection is every individual who has ever served in the United States Military.

Each of us represents a link in the chain that connects that Minuteman of
over 200 years ago to the soldier in Afghanistan today.

The great intangible of America's wars beyond logistics,
beyond strategy, beyond wonder weapons and Generals,
is the spiritual force of its fighting men and women -
and that is the force that the USO so serves.

STATE FLAG

On January 21, 1911, Representative Colonel John H. Fraine introduced H.B. No. 152 designating an official flag for the state of North Dakota (1911 S.L., ch. 283). The legislation specifically required that the flag conform to the color, form, and size of the regimental flag carried by the North Dakota Infantry in the Spanish-American War in 1898 and Philippine Island Insurrection in 1899; the only exception was the name North Dakota placed on the scroll below the eagle. On March 3, 1911, the Legislative Assembly adopted the North Dakota state flag. North Dakota Century Code Section 54-02-02 describes the state flag in detail.

In 1951 S.B. No. 156 established the North Dakota State Flag Commission to consider changes to the flag (1951 S.L., ch.303). The commission concluded the flag "too closely resembled the coat of arms of the United States and that the flag was not symbolic of North Dakota." The commission's conclusions were widely challenged and its suggested changes rejected. S.B. No. 265 was introduced during the 1953 session and contained the recommendation of the flag commission. That legislation was defeated.

North Dakota's dark blue field displays a bald eagle holding an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its claws. In its beak, the eagle carries a ribbon with the words " One nation made up of many states". The shield on its breast has thirteen stars, representing the original thirteen states. The fan shaped design above the eagle represents the birth of a new nation, the United States. The name "North Dakota" appears on a red scroll below the eagle.

STATE SEAL

The description reads as follows: A tree in the open field, the trunk of which is surrounded by three bundles of wheat; on the right a plow, anvil and sledge; on the left, a bow crossed with three arrows, and an Indian on horseback pursuing a buffalo toward the setting sun; the foliage of the tree arched by a half circle of forty-two stars, surrounded by the motto Liberty and Union Now and Forever, One and Inseparable; the words Great Seal at the top; the words State of North Dakota at the bottom; October 1st on the left and 1889 on the right.

To more clearly define the acceptable uses of the Great Seal and to end the dependency on the opinions, Senate Bill 2448 was passed by the Fifty-fourth Legislative Assembly. The bill gave the Secretary of State greater flexibility and authority in carrying out the custodial responsibilities related to the Great Seal. In addition, it specifically prohibited the use of the Great Seal for political purposes. The existing law was also amended to allow the Great Seal to be reproduced, with the concurrence of the Secretary of State, on items for sale as gifts and souvenirs by the State Historical Society and the Parks and Recreation Department.

"The North Dakota Great Seal is the state's only symbol that is protected by state law (Section 54-02-01 of the North Dakota Century Code). It cannot be reproduced or modified in any manner for use in any commercial applications. For more information regarding its use, contact the office of the North Dakota Secretary of State."

STATE BIRD

Western Meadowlark (Sturnella Neglecta) Approximately the size of a robin, the meadowlark sports a yellow breast with a black bib over its mottled brown body. These song birds are found from Wisconsin to Texas and westward to the Pacific.

STATE TREE

American Elm (Ulmus Americana) Common across the state, the American Elm often reaches 120 feet or taller.

STATE FISH

[ Named by resolution rather than bill, the measure does not appear in the North Dakota Century Code as codified law. ] Northern Pike (Esox Lucius) North Dakota waters have yielded mammoth size Northern Pike, resulting in a national sports fishing reputation for the state.

STATE FLOWER

Wild Prairie Rose (Rosa Blanda or Arkansana) The flower has been identified as Rosa Pratincula in species. The flower sports five bright pink petals with a tight cluster of yellow stamens in the center. The Wild Prairie Rose grows along roadsides, in pastures, and in native meadows.
