David Geffen, a billionaire music mogul and world-class fund-raiser for Gov. Gray Davis, wanted a seawall on the beach in front of his Malibu estate.

Children's television tycoon Haim Saban, a $642,000 Davis donor, hoped to build a palatial Malibu beachfront compound.

More Davis dialing for dollars news.

Seriously, I am amazed that the liberal newspapers are piling on Davis so close to the election. I guess they figure that no matter what they say, Davis will win and they don't want to be accused of not informing the voters of this stuff.

Also, if there's anything that parts newspapers from Democrats, it's campaign fund raising.

Really good article!

For more on this issue, see my account of an anti-Coastal Commission meeting in Malibu. My piece shows the side of the little guy.

Harris, the coastal act co-author, said she has seen Nichols remind commissioners, "I control your budget," when the commission seemed poised to defy the administration on an issue. Nichols said she was making a fiscal point, not trying to intimidate the commission.
What's the difference between "making a fiscal point" and intimidating the commissioners? None, I'd say.

The whole way the Coastal Commission is run looks like a nasty shakedown to me, whether deliberate or not.

I'm passionate about this issue because I have a dream of buying a small lot in Malibu someday and building a house - and I know I'm highly unlikely to have great political influence.

Well you never know when your Video Camera might catch something that a powerful politican might want hidden and pay handsomely to you with some governmental favor!

Oh, dear, then I'd actually have to hope for the re-election of Gray Davis, and I'm afraid I can't stomach that :-).

I wonder how hard it would be to get some dirt on the Coastal Commission itself? Think Nathanson.

Even the City of Malibu, which was founded with the espress goal of saving Malibu from developers, is further to the right of the Coastal Commission and their outrageous land grab.
