I take exception to the Caprice. I've owned several, as well as the permutations of it. Pontiac Bonneville, Buick Electra and Park Avenue, Olds 88 and 98, and lets not forget Cadillacs, using the same platform into the mid/late 90's with Chevrolet. And that's not counting the wagons or the cabs. It does exactly what it was designed to do, and continued to sell well for two decades with minor variations. How many different engine/transmission combinations could you get? How many different price points and trim levels? Two doors, four doors, wagons...Parts are cheap for the most part, and they just don't die with routine maintenance. Its not unusual to get a couple hundred thousand miles out of one.

If you took all the vehicles that GM produced on that single RWD platform from '76 until something like '96, I'll bet it was the best selling car of all time. There are still plenty running around.

I loved my '84 Caprice. Never had a moment's trouble with it. After a wreck totalled it, we replaced it with a '90 Camry. It's okay, but I've been at the mercy of a tow truck more than once. I also have to have the engine pulled for a stupid transmission leak--I miss my Chevy Tank!

10-4 on the Caprice. I owned two, both with V8's. Tough (rugged, dependable) cars. While in production they were police cars and taxi's. When I was trading in my '87 4-door I received an offer from some outfit that was shipping them to the middle-east. Seems they were popular there due to engines, room inside and powerful air-conditioning systems.

Both cars served me well for many miles. No complaints, ever. And how did this car get on the "dog" list?

I bought a 77 Caprice from a friend as an in-between-new-car vehicle. After 165K, It stills rides better than my new 01 Taurus. Steering is tricky though. That criticism is valid. But it must have been a great ride when brand new.

Ditto that on the Caprice. I owned several wagons on this frame, all purchased with over 100k on them. Two of them made it to 200k. They were heavy duty, reliable, cheap to operate and if necessary, cheap to fix. I could carry more weight than I could in my half ton Ford pickup. Great for swap meets, landlords and young families.

My kids eventually got embarrassed and I switched to Chrysler vans. Handling and visibility is much better, and they are generally reliable, but when they crap out it is a big bill.

You are absolutely correct.
I have had 9 Chevy Caprices.
ALWAYS exceeded 175K Miles every single one of 'em.
Easy and inexpensive to diagnose repair, very safe, they ride very nice (they ain't supposed to be a race car anyhow -I have an E-Type for that!).
Anyone slagging these cars doesn't know anything about cars! They are still one of the best vehicles/values on the road. Take a look around, How many other vehicles (that old) are still crawling (they are like tanks !).
