MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- Ben & Jerry's said Thursday it would lay off 52 people at its South Burlington headquarters in the ice cream maker's second round of job cuts this year.
The company described the cuts as part of a larger strategy to bolster its position and fuel future growth of the 25-year-old company.

What? Ben and Jerry's, of all companies, embracing PROFIT over people?

And right before the holiday season. Heartless liberals!
To: Poohbah
that's because they sold out a couple of years ago. Apparently they value making a nice profit from their own stock holdings!

Yeh, more bad news.
Yesterday, Baskin et al announced they would lay off 29 out of 31 flavors...

I'm shocked, SHOCKED, SHOCKED that Ben and Jerry's would do such a thing to make money. Money is the root of all evil! I'll bet that one of the people laid off is gay! That's PROOF of discrimination. I hope a jury awards several times the net asset value of the company to this guy when he sues!

I thought Ben and Jerry's might be in trouble - advertisements were appearing for them on the London Underground: something which they hadn't ever needed hitherto.

Will this boost their stock to 25¢?
To: dfwgator
Yeah, I expected to see Willie's by-line.

Ben & Jerry's to lay off 52 Bigger news would be if I had the willpower to lay off Ben and Jerry's.
To: Oldeconomybuyer
As everybody knows, if Ben and Jerry's would just pay a "living wage", then their workers would be better off. But instead, Ben and Jerry's is laying off workers because the Fat Cats just want to line their pockets. The recent downturn in the economy should cause Ben and Jerry's to be compassionate to their workers and provide more insurance and retirement benefits, but instead they are starving the children and making sure that free breakfast programs are cancelled at nearby public schools.
(Did that sound inane and factless enough for a liberal discussion of the situation? I'm thinking of sending it as a letter to the editor to a couple of Vermont newspapers and wanted to know if it has a chance to be published.)
To: Oldeconomybuyer
This is what I sent to B & J's.
"WHAT??? You laying off/closing plants. How can you give into the corporate greed like ENRON and others. What's more important PEOPLE or Money?? Damn hippies...."
Will keep you informed if I get an answer.

Gee, maybe if Jerry and Ben donated all their money to the employees instead of the Democrats...
Jerry recently went to Minnesota to personally campaign for Wellstone, saying he'd maxed out on money donations.
