If only the GOP would do more of this sort of thing! It's clever, funny and aggressive all at once. Don't whine about what the other guy's doing. Fight back, with wit and style. For once, they've done it. Good job!

I like this one. If I see this ad on television, I will not change the channel in protest.

I think the style is great. I think the substance is weak in a few areas. It makes it sound like investing in the stock mkt is bad or something. The govt should be investing in the market. So I think the ad is too defensive and should be more aggressive. I love the cartoon though.

It's not the government's job to talk up (or down!) the stock market. If you want to invest in the market, it's your call. But the more of my money they free up, the better.

Yes I invest in the stock market like every sensible citizen should. And the government should take ALL of the social security monies they take from us and invest ALL of it in a balanced portfolio of bonds and stocks. And the accounts should be in our own names. Right now they raid the fund and it hardly gets 1%. How old are you? Bob Brinker's web site is a good place to go for some investing education. Or if you are just one of those who are arguing that we should not even HAVE social security, I won't waste time on discussing that lost cause with you. Take care.

The govt should be investing in the market.

I seriously disagree with this. If the government starts investing SS funds in the stock market, they will immediately become the biggest investor in the market. That means that in addition to all their other coercive methods, they could now bankrupt a company just by stating that "The Congressional Investment Office has issued a statement that they will pull all SS investments from companies that discriminate on the basis of prior felony convictions."

Bush is pushing voluntary investment accounts for younger workers, where THEY will decide where to invest their money, not the government. Also, when I worked for City of Austin, one of the City Managers saw the 200 million we had in our retirement account and started smacking his lips. He tried to order our pension to invest in low interest housing loans for people who could not get home financing through other means. Of course, everyone knows the reason people can't get a loan from a bank is the bank doesn't think they'll repay it. This means the interest rate on these loans should be higher (greater risk, higher return). The city manager, of course, didn't care if the pension fund went broke, as he would be long gone before that happened, and he would get great press for helping the poor by throwing away other people's money. Individual accounts or a series of private pension funds using sound fiduciary standards is the way to go. Put money around a politician and they'll steal it or use it to buy votes.

As to the ad, terrific.

I truly don't understand your concern. First of all the Social Security "trust fund" is a shell game. There is no fund. Its raided very day. So, the first step should be to truly have a separate SS fund, a lock box, where Goron does not have the key. Second, a decision should be made as to what to do with this large sum of money. I say invest it in a balanced portfolio of stocks and bonds. One could argue over which stocks, funds, etc Heck just put it in a mix of S&P 500 and bond index funds for all I care. Whatever it was invested in would raise far more money than what's in that SS fund today.

Who picks the stocks, bonds, mutual funds? The government could politicize this. Nah. Can't imagine that! Maybe try to pay off friends in various investment institutions? Yes, probably. Have to watch them like hawks. You say they could p!ss the money away by "investing" it in low-interest loans. That's basically the crap they do today. 100% of it is politicized and goes towards guvmint programs and the slop-over goes out in current payments. No, this money should be invested in stocks, bonds, GNMAs, not loans. However, 'imperfect' this would be, it would be far superior to what we have today where they already are doing what you fear.

Also, we should be able to invest our Social Security payments in a balanced portfolio of stocks and bonds, not a lousy 2% but the full amount. If this were done, everyone would have a far greater amount of money in their social security accounts.

Do I think this will happen? No, because most of the politicians are too gutless to state the obvious - the government should invest our social security funds - ALL of it - as a family would invest for their retirement.

That idea terrifies me. For a lot of reasons that you seem to understand.
But what bothers me more is that so many think that this is what Bush is proposing. It isn't!
