[history]
Bill McBride, the Democratic nominee for governor, has bagged the biggest endorsement of his campaign: Republican Gov. Jeb Bush.
"He really is one of the great Floridians of our time," Bush says of McBride -- the same opponent the governor has been attacking as a "reckless corporate lawyer" in ads for months.
Bush's high praise, videotaped for an awards ceremony at McBride's former law firm in 1999, begins airing today statewide. The McBride campaign has made Bush's remarks the centerpiece of a new TV ad challenging the governor for running attack ads against McBride.

"The Democrat's tactic -- using the kind words of his opponent in a campaign-closing commercial -- has no precedent in modern statewide campaigns."
My, how surprising.

The equivalent of McBride/McAuliffe's schoolyard punch in the nose.

Yes, but Bush could always counter with - McBride was a good guy until he aligned himself with McAwful and x42. Those 2 names should ellicit some negative responses to McBride.

"If he has one worth getting on tape."
Actually,
The Bush campaign is ready with its own, Nov. 15, 1999, St. Petersburg Times dispatch from Jerusalem covering McBride's travel then with Bush on a trade mission to Israel. McBride praised Bush then as "a person who cares for people," and said the governor had used his first year in office to "boldly tackle problems."
The problem is that it doesn't sound like it's on video tape. The TV ads would be much more effective than print.

That's a good idea. Birds of a feather, etc. Governor Bush has material where McBride is complimenting him, but I don't think it's on tape.

McBride is a goner if the best his campaign can come up with is a videotape showing Jeb as a good-natured person behaving in an appropriately diplomatic way at an awards ceremony.
I'd say it would be much more harmful if they had Jeb at an awards ceremony saying nasty things about McBride! You just don't do that. Perhaps Dems don't understand etiquette and civility. I predict this ad will backfire.

This is a huge mistake. The backlash will be terrific. McAuliffe and his klintonian thugs attribute no sense to the voting public. Big mistake.

I hope so. We had the dem candidates for governor and senator crash a long-standing campaign BBQ Congressman Jimmy Duncan (R) has in Knoxville. They showed with signs (and a few thugs), grabbing a lot of attention. I think it generally made them look small by comparison to the congressman who graciously said that "everyone is welcome."
To: TN4Liberty
Sounds like Duncan is a good man.

McBride is on the defensive.
His ads down here are bitching about Bush's "lies" about McMumble's tax plans.
This means that McBride's people know that Bush's negative ad barrage is hurting them. So his "message", such as it is, is being drowned out.
This McBride tactic won't work. And Terry McAuliffe is blowing smoke.
Be Seeing You,
Chris

Mark Silva is proving himself to be one very biased reporter. Jeb is an honorable man. McBride isn't. The press will continue to spin McBride and smear Jeb.
I need some objective, wise Freepers' opinions on this:
Gannett pol. reporter doing a negative story on FR?. When a political webpage providing news to millions of Floridians is consistantly, clearly biased...and being respectful hasn't worked, will fighting back result in ever more deceptive and meanspirited reporting?

Unfortunately:
Posted this am by floriduh voter:
I woke up to an Anti-Jeb commercial where they altered his voice so that Governor Bush sounds like satan in the exorcist. In the first place, the tape was recorded ILLEGALLY and I think it's illegal to alter someone's voice or documents. I didn't appreciate probably TERRY MACAULIFFE turning Jeb into a ghoul.
We must expect the worst until November 5, hope our side has counter-offensive planned and pray that at least 50 percent of Florida's voters are intelligent enough to vote for Governor Bush.
To: windchime
they altered his voice so that Governor Bush sounds like satan in The ExorcistHmm, didn't know about that. To counter this dirty trick, could we perhaps get Linda Blair to endorse Jeb?

"When a political webpage providing news to millions of Floridians is consistantly, clearly biased...and being respectful hasn't worked, will fighting back result in ever more deceptive and meanspirited reporting?"
Short answer: Probably, yes.
Long answer below:
Introspection is not practiced in our media. They have that same self-esteem problem that most of today's students have. They are correct in whatever they 'feel' and highly resent any challenge to their accuracy. This is a carefully cultivated attribute for which we can thank the NEA, HRC, PFAW and their ilk.
You have noted that the negative 'story' is directed outward, not inward. Had FReepers brought the issue to the attention of Gannett, with the offenders (DU) being part of Gannett's ideological group, there would be no story. That's just the way it is. They THINK they are as correct as we KNOW we are, and don't confuse them with facts!
RC, you clearly identified the news that is being under-reported or un-reported. Do we roll over and play dead? NO! Continuing to bring these items to the attention of the media could result in truth accidentally being published.
Longterm solution? Starve them. Don't buy advertising or subscriptions. Don't confer the aura of credibility by quoting them or giving their polls status. Enhance the viability of the individually owned media by supporting them; consequently, making them less susceptible to take-over by the giants. The truth has a better chance of getting out between the cracks of stones than through welded sheets of metal.
No claim here of objectivity or wisdom, but these are my thoughts.

That is too good, governsleastgovernsbest!!

Thanks for the advice, windchime. Your points are well taken. I do think that we need to make an effort to get the facts out...and that the polls matter to sheeple, browsing local campaign coverage - thinking they're doing their civic duty by reading the "official" news site, or watching CNN.
I took a stroll through the Fla. county GOP webpages today and found a few fine antidotes to any dirty Dem. tricks, imho:
1) UNITED WE STAND! All but the most delusional Dems. understand the importance of this today.
2) Barbara Bush!
The day of the last debate, Barbara Bush told the women of Broward County the truth about her son, Jeb - praising his leadership, accomplishments and character. Bill McBride went on to lie about Jeb and praise Barbara Bush that night. Bill, either Barbara Bush is lying, or you are: (^:
You may not agree with all the decisions Jeb has made as governor, but you cannot help but agree that he has been a strong and decisive leader. You know without a doubt he has your best interests, and that of your state, at heart. - Former First Lady Barbara Bush, Speech to Broward County Women at Nova Southeast University, Oct. 22, 2002
I sent the article to summer, hoping she'll do a
summer's witty commentary thread. (^:
The Barbara Bush speech is so perfect for e-mailing to women friends AND to counter the Dem. lies (You calling Barbara Bush a liar, Mr. McBride? LOL!).
