DENVER - Four years ago, Joe Rogers was a rising Republican star.

At 33, Mr. Rogers had just been elected Colorado's lieutenant governor, making him the youngest in the nation and the only black Republican to hold a state's No. 2 post. Of course you want a vivrant, articulate, tough-minded candidate who appears to be genuinely concerned about constituents. But we fall into the mental trap set by the Left when we automatically assume that a candidate must be black for black voters to accept him or her. This is nothing more than another form of identity politics. We lose that game.

I swear, I could write a book on this subject.

The Republicans need to run ads in heavily Democratic areas that contain black voters, sending a simple message about the Republican Party, its' founding and historical anti-slavery role along with Lincoln as the Republican Emancipator and then show the contrast with the Dems and the likes of KKK Senator Byrd.
