LEXINGTON, S.C. -- Nearly 40 years have passed since Preston Callison lost a race for Congress, yet the lesson remains with him today. For a Democrat to win in South Carolina, he says, the key is: ''Don't act like one.''

In the political ads that have been mailed out the last several years in Texas, it gets kind of funny. The Republican candidates put the red, white, and blue elephant on their flyers and proclaim they are Republicans. The way you know the Democratic candidates is that they DON'T tell you what party they belong to. Same with the yard posts and highway signs.

I'd be mortified and so ashamed to be a DEM. They truly are the animal that represents their party.

The "son of a liberal former Senator" that is running here is running commercials showing a) him praying at the table (barf), b) him dressed in camo with a shotgun.
The sad thing is that he's going to win with it.

Exactly. The dem yard signs are in strange shades of everything--purple to green and gold, like Mardi Gras colors. But the Republican signs are red, white and blue, and are unashamed of party affiliation.

Rush just called attention to this article. How dems are running away fromt the Dem/lib label. I hope what they did in Minn. gets alot of media attention.
In Texas you do not even see the word 'Democrat' being aired on the commericals.

The sad thing is that he's going to win with it. Don't be so sure, latest polls have the two neck and neck.
I think the voters of your state will realize that this election is to vital to thrown away because of Hutchinson's personal decisions.

I have noticed that in Okla. also. Dems don't put their label on the yard signs. Strange indeed, ashamed of themselves no doubt about it. If they did start putting a label on them, look for "Progressive" to be used, that sounds good and will fool a lot of dumb voters. A rose is rose is still a skunk.

Could you tell how decent South Carolinians were when they marched lockstep to the Capitol after Clintons Impeachment?

I couldn't believe it last week when a telephone caller actually identified herself as calling for Planned Parenthood and wanted to know how I was going to vote. (My incisors felt like they were growing 2 inches and red meat was on the table.)
She wanted me to know that Ron Kirk (Democratic candidate for the Senate) supported the woman's *right to choose* and didn't I believe in that. I started in with mentioning Ron Kirk's latest racist comments and was just getting started on the rest when she hung up. And I was being accurate, polite and well-spoken. Bummer.
LibDems have a really uphill battle in growing parts of the country. We are getting educated....

Same thing is really happening all over this country. I predict the trend will continue considering the embarrassing over-the-edge behavior at Wellstone's "memorial service" and the running of the party into the ground by the Clinton/McAuliffe connection.

If they did start putting a label on them, look for "Progressive" to be used, that sounds good and will fool a lot of dumb voters. Yes, and what's REALLY scary about the "progressive" label is that it's a euphemism for "Socialist".

Democrats lie to both sides.
. In North Carolina, Bowles is running ads on African-American stations that feature Clinton, something he avoids in mainstream media.
