[history]
"The American people have indicated that they want the Congress, the House, the Senate, the president to work together, to get things done, to produce results, not get tangled up in the partisan politics that we saw so much of this year here in the Senate," said incoming Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, Mississippi Republican. In the 108th Congress, Republicans will control 51 seats and Democrats 47, with one independent, Sen. James M. Jeffords of Vermont. The Louisiana seat will not be decided until a Dec. 7 runoff between Democrat Sen. Mary L. Landrieu and Republican state Commissioner of Elections Suzanne Haik Terrell. No challenge to the current Republican leadership team is apparent, and talk of Sen. Lincoln Chaffee defecting to the Democratic Party has subsided.

If Mr. Stevens steps down from Appropriations, he still would have seniority on Commerce and Mr. McCain could find himself without a chairmanship.
This would be a dream come true! We have to ensure that Stevens moves to chair the Commerce Committee and leaves longtime anti-Bush anti-GOP traitor John McShame in the lurch. It is payback time for all the treachery and subversive efforts which he has waged to help the RATS pass legislation--the most offensive of which being of course the RAT Congressional Majority Insurance (Campaign Finance Reform) Bill which went into effect yesterday that will decimate the GOP majority in Congress in the next election. Please call Senator Stevens and tell him we need his leadership on the Commerce Committee!

Hopefully, the republicans have learned how to lead when they have the majority, however, with lott as majority "leader" I am not so sure. He'll probably try to make peace with democrat macCain, thus polluting their agenda. IMO, their biggest mistake in '94 was to try to make changes too quickly. Instead of being subtle, they gave ammo to the leftist press by attempting to change things too quickly.
I hope and pray that this republican party is the true Republican party of old, which is to say, a party of principle, and not a clone of the democrats.
Time will tell. If they uphold the Constitution, then this writer will come back home.

On the homeland security bill, the Dems would do well to cut their losses and let it pass next week, because if they don't, the new Congress will pass homeland security legislation no later than February that the Dems like even less than the one in play now. There are only two items on the Senate's must-do list next week: finish the FY2003 approps bills and reauthorize welfare reform. Everything else can be delayed, so it would behoove the Dems to cooperate, bite the bullet and let the Republicans take over. I apologize for the cliches in this comment; there is something about politics that brings them out in me.

I think whoever the leader of the Senate is will get a lot of "direction" from the White House.

I have no doubt that the democrats will use every dirty trick to try and stall out the senate for their own lying, selfish interests...they have nothing more to lose, so why shouldn't they act like the moronic babies they've shown themselves to be...Shoot, they can't even take the blame for their own screw up in this election! They're pointing fingers at the media even for "not getting out their message" Oh Yeah, your message went out all right Dems YOU GOT NOTHING TO OFFER, THEREFORE YOU RECEIVED NOTHING!

When Republicans assign committee chairmanships, several senior members would face term limits and reassignment under the current rules.
There seems to be some confusion as to whether term limits apply in view of the unprecedented mid-term changeover of control of the US Senate. It appears that term-limited Committee chairman are going to be given another two years which is very unfortunate since it means McShame will likely continue on as Committee Chairman which will give him a powerful perch to attack the President and stymie the conservative Republican legislative agenda in the future.

Unfortunately, I think that you are probably correct. Lott is too wimpy to yank McShame's Committee Chairmanship and give it to someone more principled and more committed to the President and to the Republican Party. That is why we need a new Senate Majority Leader like John Kyl or Don Nickles!
