For a long time, I've been telling political activists -- mostly of the libertarian variety -- that it's not enough to know what you're against; you have to know what you're for, and you have to talk about how you intend to achieve it.

The Democrats had a very tough job for this exact reason. Their party identity had become that of an "anti-" party. They were simply "anti-" whatever the Republicans were advocating. However, they dared not talk about what they were for, because they already knew it repelled the average decent American. So they confined themselves to carping -- and reaped the predictable results.

Now, of course, it's time for the Republicans to put up or shut up.
