A Touch of Home
.
This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.
Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.
Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.
This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.
Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.
We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.
So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.
.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae

Thank you Aeronaut for flying
The USO Canteen FReeper Style
To Iowa today for our Liberty R&R

Iowans transformed fertile prairies into
the world's most productive farmland.

Iowa's State Capitol is a century-old building
featuring a 275-foot gold-leafed dome flanked
by four smaller domes, a grand staircase and
beautiful woodwork. Its grounds include
monuments commemorating war veterans,
including a new WWII memorial and
Wall of Memories

Downtown Des Moines, located on the
beautiful Des Moines River, is the central
hub of the city and features every kind of
entertainment imaginable, including
shopping, restaurants, music and sporting events.

Experience the Old World charm and tradition
of Holland at Pella's annual Tulip Time Festival.
See windmills and acres of tulips; taste Dutch
letter pastries; watch Klokkenspel, the animated
musical; and stroll through courtyards and sunken gardens

Visit six historic covered bridges scattered
across the countryside, all listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. Feel
the romance surrounding the bridges

The mighty Mississippi River forms the
entire eastern border of Iowa and draws
thousands of tourists each year for festivals,
riverboat excursions, and many other activities
honoring this great river.

Designed in 1917 and officially adopted in 1921,
the state flag of Iowa contains an eagle carrying
the state motto, "Our liberties we prize, and
our rights we will maintain."

The flower, the Wild Rose blooms in shades
of pink and was chosen as an Iowa symbol in
1897 because it decorated the silver service
Iowans presented that year to the battleship USS Iowa.

The Great Seal of Iowa pictures a citizen soldier
standing in a wheat field surrounded by farming
and industrial tools, with the Mississippi River in
the background. An eagle overhead bears
the state motto.

Tribute To HEROES
.
While the dogtag is used to provide information on an individual serviceman, I also believe that the chain which holds them represents a connection to all servicemen, no matter where you served, how you served or when you served.
.
The Minuteman in 1776 has a connection to the soldier fighting in Afghanistan today. That connection is every individual who has ever served in the United States Military. Each of us represents a link in the chain that connects that Minuteman of over 200 years ago to the soldier in Afghanistan today. SAMWolf

aka Johnny Gage
In Honor of the fallen unknown:
There are soldiers in many places
For some, we're allowed to see their faces
For others, are required to stay hidden
and do the orders that they are bidden.
If a known, brave soul's life comes to pass
we're told who he is and that he's home at last
If a hidden one dies while he's doing the plan
he's known only to his family and not the average man.
He's on a covert mission, so we are told
He died a soldiers way, and his life was bold
He's a hero to us, in each and every way,
because he died protecting the U.S. of A.

Good Saturday Meeeeoow-ning everyone! What a beautiful state to spend Liberty R&R in today. I've only been through a portion of Iowa once, on the way to Minnesota years ago. I remember miles and miles of corn fields and was blown away by that. I thought it was gorgeous...guess that's the farm girl in me.
Hello service men and women past and present, and allies. Thank You! for defending our Freedom. I hope you enjoy the trip through beautiful Iowa that Snow Bunny has taken everybody on today.

Top o' the mornin' to ya all.
And now that we are wiping away the night's cobwebs, may I gently take this opportunity to GRACIOUSLY INVITE EVERYONE to join us in the USO Canteen Chapel tomorrow morning, November 10, in the year of our Lord 2002?
As always, there is plenty of room, the most pleasant folk you can find anywhere, hymns for your singin' along, passages from the Good Book and a devotional layout to encourage you on your significant way.
God be near you. God watch over you.
AND GOD REMIND YOU THAT YOU ARE LOVED IN HIM, PRAYED FOR CONSTANTLY, AND MEAN THE WORLD TO THE REST OF US 'OUT HERE.'
Got it? Got it!
Blessings,
Chap Grant

Today's FEEBLE attempt at humor:
A newly married sailor was informed by the Navy that he
was going to be stationed a long way from home on a remote
island in the Pacific for a year. A few weeks after he
got there he began to miss his new wife, so he wrote her
a letter. "My love," he wrote, "we are going to be apart
for a very long time. Already I'm starting to miss you
and there's really not much to do here in the evenings.
Besides that, we're constantly surrounded by young
attractive native girls. Do you think if I had a hobby of
some kind I would not be tempted?"
So his wife sent him back a harmonica saying, "why don't
you learn to play this?" Eventually his tour of duty came
to an end and he rushed back to his wife.
"Darling" he said, "I can't wait to get you into bed so
that we make passionate love!"
She kissed him and said, "First let's see you play that
harmonica."

Since we're having R&R in Iowa tdoay, And since Iowa does produce alot of
CORN.............
My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned...couldn't concentrate.
Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the ax.
After that I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn't suited for it - mainly because it was a sew-sew job.
Next I tried working in a muffler factory, but that was too exhausting.
Then I tried to be a chef. I figured it would add a little spice to my life but I just didn't have the thyme.
I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I couldn't cut the mustard.
My best job was being a musician, but eventually I found I wasn't noteworthy enough.
I studied a long time to become a doctor, but I didn't have any patience.
Next was a job in a shoe factory. I tried, but I just didn't fit in.
I became a professional fisherman, but discovered that I couldn't live on my net income.
I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining.
So then I got a job in a workout center, but they said I wasn't fit for the job.
I finally got a job as a historian, until I realized there was no future in it.
My last job was working at Starbucks, but I had to quit because it was always the same old grind.

SOS is the Breakfast on the farm today. Pheasant Hunting is the activity of choice for the menfolk this weekend. The weather is beautiful, in the mid to high 60's, very little wind. Rain predicted for tonite.
The city cousins arrived before dawn, bearing Krispy Kremes. I am preparing a big pot of chilli for them to have for lunch. I'm not sure it even matters to them whether or not they have a successful hunt. I think they just really enjoy tromping thru the fields, up and down fence rows and waterways, hoping to scare up a nice rooster.
