Good one. I actually think Sorkin might go for it, if Michael J. Fox was willing and healthy enough, and the Family Ties creators gave their permission.

It would be a great matchup - both characters are smart-alek know-it-alls.

With the West Wing ratings in a nosedive, the show needs something to perk it up.

I understand that there is a large population concentration there, but that sure wasn't what the electoral college was set up to deal with.
If that was the criteria, places like LA and New York City would also have their own electors.
You haven't convinced me. The electors are supposed to be from the state legislatures, not high population density areas.

But the people in LA and NYC already had electors in 1961, but the people in DC didn't.

BTW, I'm not thrilled about it either. I think that back when they had a chance, they should have reduced the size of DC down to the federal buildings and immediate environs, and returned the rest to MD. If the Marylanders would take it, that is.

...But Sorkin was unrealistic when he had Bartlett, a President who lied to the American people, then admitted he lied, then was censured by Congress... run unopposed in the Democratic primary. Not going to happen in real life...

Don't agree. Bartlet "lied" (more like withheld info) about the extent of his illness. There was really very little deception involved, actually. Some obscure government form should have mentioned it, or something like that. He never got on tv and outright lied to everyone.

Anyone would be sympathetic to Bartlet, given the facts. And they'd admire him more for quickly admitting what he did, taking the punishment, and moving on.

...Can you, or anyone, give me a good reason that the seat of the federal government is given the electoral power equivalent to a state?...

DC, no matter how large its population gets, can only have the electoral power equal to the smallest state, and they have no vote in Congress and no Senators. So the DC citizens don't really have the voting power of other US citizens.

Lots of people live in DC, they should be able to vote for the president. I don't know what the conflict of interest would be.
