For Tavis Smiley, words come easy. He talks fast, his passion obvious and his message clear.

The author and National Public Radio talk-show host wants folks, particularly those in the black community, to be enlightened, encouraged and empowered. It's been his professional mission and his latest book, Keeping the Faith: Stories of Love, Courage, Healing and Hope from Black America (Doubleday, $22.95), stays true to his crusade.

Yeah, I know Tavis Smiley is on NPR but his show is way more interesting than the usual pontificating leftist commentators on NPR.

Smiley lost his popular talk show after he had a very public dispute with Black Entertainment Television.

Does anybody out there know what this was all about? Details please.

If I remember right, he was hosting specials and doing narrartion outside of BET, contrary to the terms of his contract.

Oh. A few days ago I heard him conducting a good interview with Condoleeza Rice.
