You're Invited! TX FReeper FieldTrip to Bush (41) Pres. Library, College Station: Sat, Nov 23
Heart of Texas (Austin) FR Chapter ^ | Nov. 22, 2002 | TXBubba, TheSarce

Posted on 11/22/2002 9:39:16 AM PST by TheSarce

The Heart of Texas Chapter (HOT) of Free Republic would like to invite any interested FReepers and their families to join us on Saturday, November 23rd for a day at the George H.W. Bush Library and Museum in College Station, Texas. We will meet at 12:00 noon inside the rotunda of the museum. At 3:30, we'll go to a local restaurant for some good food, conversation, and FReeper Fun. Please join us for a fun afternoon!

We have secured a group discount rate of $3.50 for adults and students (see details below). Children age 16 and under are FREE. Parking is also FREE.

(See updated details below, after exhibit info:)

Details about the Bush Library can be found at http://bushlibrary.tamu.edu.

Currently there are several exhibits showing. They only run through January 5th so if you are interested, now is the time to make the trip. Exhibits include:

Freedom's Journey:
Two centuries later, the powerful proclamations of the freedom-loving people now called our "Founding Fathers" still ring true. A rare broadside copy of the Declaration of Independence will visit the Museum. Don't miss this wonderful opportunity to see one of only 25 remaining copies of this historic document. Freedom's Journey tells the story of our nation's beginnings through original documents, photographs and artifacts. They are direct links to a time when brave individuals risked everything for their belief in liberty.

Remembering September 11:
As people struggled with the terrible events of September 11, artists from all over the United States began to pour their feelings into their work. Whether it was paint or sculpture, needlework or decoupage, the emotions of a nation are reflected and captured in these wonderful expressions that honor the victims of September 11.

Art and Essay Contest
See the wonderful entries in our annual art contest inspired by last year's popular exhibit, Stripes and Stars. Also on display will be the winning essays from our contest based on "American Democratic Ideas and Practices".

The Fires of Kuwait:
This photographic exhibit documents the international coalition of oil well fire fighters who extinguished the oil fires lit by fleeing Iraqi troops at the conclusion of Desert Storm.

UPDATE:
The following are the latest details, our original thread is here.
Hope you can join us for a Post-Election-Victory Freeper Field Trip! Please reply to this thread so we can keep an eye out for you.

Getting There:

A map to the Bush Presidential Library can be found here.

That link is the "official" map, but the file is ridiculously large. Here's the street address if you prefer to type it into your favorite mapping program:

The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum
1000 George Bush Drive West
College Station, Texas 77845
Telephone: (979) 260-9552

When you arrive:

First, apparently there are no concessions or snacks available at the Library, so keep that in mind before meeting us at Noon. We'll be heading over to the restaurant at about 3:30 pm.

The Library has its own parking lot, and parking is free. Be aware that you will need to pass through a metal detector and bag check to enter the Library building. After passing through the security check, you'll find us in the rotunda -- we will make sure we're easy to spot!

Getting Your Discounted Admission Tickets:

Come find the group of FReepers in the rotunda, and check in with us, not at the desk! We'll give you a name tag and collect the money for your ticket. In order for us to get the Group Discount, the Library requires that we pay for the whole group at once -- so we'll check everyone in as they arrive, collect the money, and then buy the tickets and hand them out.

We'll allow a reasonable amount of time for people to arrive and get checked in before we finalize the head count and purchase the tickets, but please try to arrive as close to noon as possible. With some planning and a little luck this whole ticket transaction business will go fairly quickly. (It would be very helpful if folks could have exact change for their party. Remember, the discounted admission is $3.50 per adult, and children 16 & under are free.) This short interval between checking in and our getting the tickets distributed will be a great time to mingle and meet fellow FReepers, take some photos, and so on.

(If for some reason anyone is delayed and arrives too late to get in on the discounted tickets, please feel free to catch up with us! Regular admission is only $5.00)

Touring the Museum:

After we get the tickets distributed, we'll proceed into the Museum. It's a self-guided tour, and everyone can examine the exhibits at their own pace.

Cameras and video cameras are allowed, but no flash is permitted inside the Museum part of the building -- you can photograph the exhibits with available light only. Flash is fine in the rotunda and other parts of the facility.

In a couple of different conversations with museum staff, I got varying answers on how long it typically takes to go through the museum. Since FReepers are readers by nature and will probably tend to the longer end of the time frame, we're allowing a nice big chunk of time to explore without feeling rushed. There's also a gift shop if folks want to get souvenirs afterwards.

Re-Grouping and Heading to the Restaurant:

We'll re-group in the Rotunda by 3:30 pm and go directly to the restaurant. That should allow everyone plenty of time to explore the museum, check out the gift shop, take photos, etc.

At this posting, exactly which restaurant we're going to is not yet finalized! We've gotten some great leads from area FReepers that have helped narrow down the choices, and I'm going to do a bit more checking this afternoon (Friday). We may not have a final decision until Saturday when we see how big a group we end up with, but we promise we'll have it all worked out by the time everyone re-groups at 3:30, if not sooner.

We're really looking forward to this day-trip, it will be exciting to have FReepers converging from all over the state for a little Election-Victory celebrating. Everyone travel safe, and we'll see you Saturday! Check this thread before you leave for any last-minute updates.

Are we going to pick a time/place to convoy from?

If we want to allow 30 minutes for a quick lunch we should probably leave here by 10:00. The way we went last time was from North Austin, east on 79, SE on 36, east on 21, SE on 47. From South Austin, 21 may be better.

Thanks for getting all the info together.

Thanks for the ping. I'll be there with my daughter. She is an aspiring Aggie so we're going to do a quick tour of the campus and visitor's center then head over to the Bush Library at Noon. Regarding restaurants -- I cast a vote for Freebird's!!!!!

Valerie, will you be going? If you are and want to convoy, ping or FReepmail me. We'll probably leave the Waco area around 7:30-8:00 AM. If that doesn't work for you, I look forward to seeing you at the library.

Nothin' like a little revisionism.

Am I the only one that remembers that George HW Bush had one of the most liberal voting records in Congress before he was foisted on Reagan's ticket?

Does no one else recall the collective groan that arose from hopeful Conservatives (and Reagan supporters) when said foisting was announced at the convention in Detroit? We were hoping for a Reagan-Crane ticket...

Come on, people...Bush was a liberal from the word "Go". Hell, he could not even pretend to be Conservative enough to win a second term, proving how much like Reagan people hoped he would be the first time around, and how much he wasn't. This after approval ratings in the 70s after the Gulf War (aka the War of Coitus Interruptus).

Certainly we can remember who Bush 41 really was, and hold the feet of Bush 43 to a hotter fire.

Would you rather visit the LBJ Library?

I don't think anyone is wholeheartedly endosing Bush41's record here.

Gig 'Em, ya'll and have a wonderful time. I will think of you stomping around my collegiate hometown tomorrow and will be intensely jealous! Hope you have a great time at the Bush Library and in fellowship with each other - even the "t-sips" among you! -- E

What makes you think, out of anything I said, I'd rather visit a library commemorating a Marxist like LBJ? (A good friend, and astute political student, on LBJ: "Johnson? My only regret is that the sonofabitch died in his sleep." I laughed until I couldn't see.)

Your invitation makes no sense. Are we limited in our choices to a liberal acting like a liberal (LBJ) and a liberal pretending to be a conservative pretending to be a moderate (GHWB)? A pox on both of them, I say.
