During the 1969 season, Ohio State was winning with ease, and Hayes called his top-ranked Buckeyes "probably the best team that ever played college football." I got married to my first wife the day of the game in 69. Half her relatives were from Ohio and alf from Michigan. The Ohio relatives came to town and were bad-mouthing Michigan all morning and predicting a 50 point win because it hadn't been a very good year for Michigan up to then. When the game came on, nobody wanted to leave and go to the reception. By the time the game was over nobody on the Ohio side was speaking to the Michigan side and vice versa. By the time they got to the reception, they were practically killing each other. It took them about 6 or 7 months to get on speaking terms again.

My ex-wife used to be a wedding consultant. She did a wedding for a really nice couple here in Alabama. One was from Univ of Alabama and the other attended Auburn. Both families saw their marraige as a betrayal. The poor couple in a misguided attempt at reconciling their families scheduled the wedding for the day the two teams played, ie, the Iron Bowl. It was a disaster too. At the reception, the two families brought in two TVs. At one end of the room was one family rooting for Auburn and the other family clustered around the other TV at the other end of the room rooting for Alabama. Left alone in the center was the bride and groom. The bride was in tears.
Personally, I can't understand how two families could act the way yours did or these families in Alabama. A football game like Alabama/Auburn or OSU/Michigan is simply not that important in the larger scheme of life. I mean it's not like this was something really important like Oklahoma/Texas.
