All,
Any of you that can join us, we need lots of helping hands on Monday night!
We're meeting at 9:45 p.m., Monday night, December 16th, at the Centreville Fire Department parking lot. We're going to put door hangers on the doors of identified Republicans to remind them to vote on Tuesday the 17th.
We plan to finish by midnight.
The toughest challenge in this race is getting our people out, while competing with the Holiday season.
Please join us for the one last reminder we can give them before election day!
I hope I'll see you there. If you have any questions, please contact campaign manager Jason Flannery at 703-380-7334 or call the Hugo campaign at 703-250-0096.
Sincerely,
Ken Cuccinelli

Fairfax County
Turnout Top Issue in 40th District Vote Democrat, Republican, Two Independents Compete In Centreville Area Election By Steven Ginsberg
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, December 15, 2002; Page C04
The outcome of a special election in western Fairfax County to fill the 40th District House of Delegates seat will likely turn on how many people show up for this, the third special election in the Centreville area in four months.
< snip >
The issues in the race mirror those that voters in the region have been grappling with all year: how to fix the area's transportation network, how to control growth and how to bolster educational funding when state and local budgets are stretched thin.
< snip >
But the candidates and political observers agree that the biggest issue will be who can get more supporters to the polls Tuesday.
"When you drive the turnout down this low, it's anybody's ballgame," said state Sen. Ken Cuccinelli (R), who won a special election in a largely overlapping district in August and is co-chairing Hugo's campaign.
Republicans say their nightmare would be extremely low turnout -- about 2,000 to 3,000 voters -- in which the two conservative independents siphon votes from Hugo, allowing Hawn to edge ahead.
< snip >
Hugo will far outspend his rivals. He said he has raised close to $100,000, compared with less than $20,000 raised by Hawn. He is the only candidate to put up many signs. They stand alone along major thoroughfares, and his direct mailings are showing up in residents' mailboxes.
< snip >
Oddo, Calhoun and Hugo opposed the sales tax increase for new roads and public transit that Northern Virginians -- and 40th District voters -- defeated soundly Nov. 5. Hawn supported the measure.
If elected, Hugo said he would propose a spending cap on state government -- indexed to population and inflation -- and use any excess revenue to build new schools and roads. Hugo also said he thinks that grades kindergarten through 12 "should be exempt from any budget cuts." The technology industry lobbyist said education and transportation are the "core responsibilities for the state, and we've gotten away from it and funded too many things."

Wife and I voted this morning for Tim. At 10:30 at Clifton Elementry School we were no. 187 & 188.
The only folks outside handing out sample ballots were from Tim Hugo.

Thanks for the report. I'm feeling very optimistic about this one. Those numbers in your precinct sound like a lot of voters for a special election. When I made my phone calls, several people said they'd been called by a taped GOTV message from Sen. Warner. This campaign appears organized.

The GOP has a lop-sided majority in the General Assembly. Hope Hugo scores a win in the 40th House of Delegates District.

A new website called Virginianewssource.com just came to my attention. A lot of the folks at the Virginia Taxpayers Alliance (which includes me) plug into this fine website for state news.

Those numbers look great! I always worry when our numbers look so good early on. Look what happened in Louisiana in a few weeks ago. *bites nails*

Starting late last week, we received five recorded telephone calls from the Tim Hugo campaign, including (I think) one recorded by Tom Davis. Nothing from the other candidates.

Sheesh, nothing like pestering people. Hey, you should be at the victory party! Did you know the retired judge killed in the car accident in Clifton yesterday? Was he a Dem former member of the House of Delegates?
