Was there ever any evidence Elizabeth Smart had chatted online with anyone? As I recall, the Smart house had lots of computers which, of course, doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I'm inclined to think it was the first time for this guy. There's no indication that he knew the police were close to him and, yet, he killed himself. Sounds more like a one-time, "if I can't have her, no one will" sort of deal to me. But then, I'm no expert.

This seems like sheer ego to me rather than responsible reporting. Until they actually have something that puts him in the area at the time of her disappearance, they have squat.
BTW, didn't she disappear in the summer? It seems unlikely that the odor of a decaying body locked in a ministorage in the summer heat wouldn't be noticed.
