I lived in LA from 72-75, Portland 75-82, and Spokane 98-02. Spokane is majority Republican but unfortunately on the wrong side of the Washington-Idaho state line. I was politically active in Oregon a generation ago. At the time, it was a swing state, modestly Republican. The Democrats were blue collar. They cared about jobs. Fast forward a generation. Western Washington and Oregon are nut country. The Governor of Washington drove the state's largest private employer for 75 years, Boeing, out of the state. Mainstream Democrats supported breaching the dams, which means cutting a hole to drain the reservoir, eliminating recreation, electric power generation, navigation and irrigation and leaving an unsightly slab of concrete. The first time I heard what it is, somebody had to explain it to me. The cities are overrun with Al Qaeda. The Mayor of Portland was the only magistrate in the country not to cooperate with the FBI following 9-11. A principal Al Qaeda leader was an intern in her office. It's a different country. It's not a country I want to live in. It's growing up in the Austro-Hungarian empire and finding oneself living in Nazi Germany. It's hateful and frightening.

The first time I heard of the women's movement I thought it was a joke. The first time I heard of the animal rights movement I thought it was a joke. The first time I heard gay marriage proposed, I thought it would go nowhere. Now I know. The agenda is to repress every value I treasure and impose through coercion every value that is a religious sacrilege or a negation of the American way.

I'm convinced Americans of traditional values have to organize to impose every new encroachment, every removal of a nativity scene from a public space, every new politically correct idea. A colleague pointed out the damage the media -- FOX entertainment programming in particular -- is having on the culture.

Meanwhile, elsewhere:

This 1-meter resolution close-up satellite image of the southern area of the Yongbyon nuclear facility in North Korea (news - web sites), was taken by Space Imaging's IKONOS satellite on Feb. 22, 2000. North Korea's defiant declaration Thursday Dec. 12, 2002, that it will restart a reactor at Yongbyon as well as build other unfinished facilities intensifies old fears its nuclear ambitions could undermine global stability.

That's freakin' insane. I was born in Spokane and grew up in Seattle area. I wouldn't think of going back to Washington after I retire.

Hey, I was out in Ouray, Colorado 15 years ago. I was watching Monday night football in one of the two bars in town. I was talking to a guy who said he raised cattle on his family ranch but he couldn’t afford to live there anymore. I asked him why. He said he made about 30k per year but was told his land made him a millionaire and he couldn’t afford the taxes. He said everyone in town was dog tired, dirt poor working class but yuppies from California had moved out and started “improving” things that the locals couldn’t afford. Paving age old dirt roads to nowhere, computers and councilors in schools, etc.

The next day I was driving down a dirt road and in the distance I saw a beautiful architectural digest log home mansion. I talked to a couple on the road and they said the house was theirs. They were a youngish retired teacher couple form San Diego. They said they were escaping California.

They are everywhere.

The Afgan teacher standing in the door watching over her female students is very pretty. I read a few years ago that Kabul had some of the most beautiful women in the world. The Afgans in general are a pretty people, though warlike.

Thank you for your continuing cavalcade of courage.

Today we saw five jets in formation, too high to i.d. without the binocs, but they were gone by then.

Memo to Saddam: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and BLUto, Paul Bunyan's big blue ox, are coming to kick your ass, whatever color it is.

In traffic, one vehicle will have an American flag, one vehicle will have a green No War decal--which one will die if an al Qoward sets off a nuke or a nerve gas cocktail?

Ding ding ding--the answer is, it will be prevented by the type of forward action in Afghanistan, and tagging the Yemeni NK Scuds, and Condi telling Xiong to Make My Day, etc.

If China and NK are "lips and teeth", China's going to need dental work if NK tries to screw with us.

Your posts are always eye-opening, Diogenesis. They make me feel like a little kid again, excited to learn new things about the wide and wonderful world.

Does anyone know how women can tell each other apart when large groups of them are wearing burkhas? Are two burkhas dissimilar enough for someone to be able to distinguish between them?
