HK Edgerton's March Across Dixie Attacked

12-12-2002

Compatriots,

Today started off as another great day for H.K.'s March Across Dixie. We had 5 marchers to go along with H.K. We marched along Hwy 80 East into Choudrant, LA amidst a ear blasting parade of cars and trucks blowing horns and waving.

As we proceeded out of Choudrant, we were contacted by the local radio station for a live On-the-Road interview. It went great and brought out more people as we came into Ruston, LA. Just outside of Ruston we were met by a reporter from the Ruston Daily Leader Newspaper. We made the front page of Thursdays paper. All went well through-out the City of Ruston. We then left Ruston heading west on Hwy 80.

We had barely made it to the City Limits of Grambling, LA. when we were accosted by several hoodlums from the local Government Housing project. They were shouting vulgar phrases, throwing pieces of wood and several of them were even wearing full face hoods. Just as they appeared so did one of Grambling's Police officers. The offending people still proceeded to threaten to shoot and kill us all.

A woman from the local newspaper who had stopped to get a story for her paper never even got to take the picture of (as she referred)some good looking guys. The police officer then told us that he was going to escort us to the Mayors office, where the Mayor was waiting to meet with H.K. We loaded the vehicles and followed him down the road. He then pulled over after going only 50 ft. and got out of his car and told us that the Chief of Police was coming. After about a minute the Chief pulled up.

He then jumped out of his car and asked H.K. just what he was doing. H.K. tried to show the Chief some papers explaining what he was doing. The Chief slapped it away and told us that he did not have time for all of this and that we needed to get out of Grambling, NOW !!!!. H.K. told him that we were to go and see the Mayor, and the Chief said that we were not going to see anybody and that we would not go into Grambling at all. We explained to him what had happened back up the road and he was not concerned in the least.

We asked him if he would excort us safely out of Grambling and he told us that we would not get anything from him. Then he said again, "Get out of Grambling, NOW !!!! or else". We were still getting threats from the group that had gathered behind the Chief, who had chosen to do nothing about this.

We then thought it best to call the Sheriff's Department go get some help from them. They did have to come out to aid us 3 different times. The last time that we had to call them was when we were approached by a car as we left out of the City Limits of Grambling. The driver told us that we should get into the van and leave the area, as there was a group of people waitng ahead of us to "do us harm". The sheriff's office then sent out 2 patrol cars to stay with us until we finnished the march for the day at the outskirts of Simsboro, LA.

Marching with H. K. were the Commander and Adjutant of the Ward Camp in Farmerville, the Commander of the Nicholson Camp in Ruston, the Northeast Brigade Commander and the Commander of the Hot Springs Camp of the Arkansas Division. Also joining us on our march were 2 members of the Benton Camp of Monroe and another member of the Nicholson Camp of Ruston. We could not have asked for a better day of marching and defending our heritage.

H K and Terry Lee have had to suspend their “March Across Dixie” due to problems with their van. The “March” will be suspended until the 29th of December if the van is fixed by then, later if not. The van is leaking oil, burning oil and losing power. Some good Confederates in North Louisiana have offered to put the van in the shop in their area. However, H K and Terry want to take the van home to Ashville and have it fixed there. They had already planned to go home for Christmas anyway.

These two men have forgone paying jobs in order to support the Confederate cause with this march. They are using their personal van for this effort. They are relying on donations from camps and individuals for food, gas and lodging for the trip because they have already spent all their own personal funds on the “March”.

H K has been marching 20 miles a day, six days a week, since October. Everyone who has walked with him on the trip can testify to how tiring the 20 miles can be! He is very tired and needs to go home to see his family for Christmas. He has been willing to face hostile crowds for our cause – was attacked by a hostile crowd in Grambling, La just yesterday. He is giving more for the cause than we have seen anyone do in our lifetime.

Terry Lee has called and got an estimate of $2500 to replace the engine in his van. Everyone in the Confederacy needs to pitch in and help these two Confederates. They have given time, money, energy, courage and now the engine in their van in their extreme effort to raise funds for Heritage defense. Kirk Lyons has set up a fund to fix the van. PLEASE rush donations to:

SLRC

P.O. Box 1235

Black Mountain, NC 28711.

Be sure to designate that it is for van repairs.

Any money left over after fixing the van will go to H K and Terry Lee’s expenses on the rest of the trip. All other donations will go to the SLRC and SCV Heritage defense fund.

Please don’t let their “March Across Dixie” end because of a lack of funds. Donate what ever you can to this fund ASAP. Feel free to forward this message to others.

TOO LONG, i fear.

i do NOT believe i'll live to see freedom, BUT i DO believe in our ultimate victory AND my 12YO niece will BASK in southron LIBERTY!

if you'd like an educated (or at least 1/2-educated!) guess= 25 years, unless Los Estados Unidos de Azatlan secedes soon- then all timelines and bets are OFF!

for one thing, we'll see how many million latinos the damnyankees/haters are willing to kill to keep CA,NM,AZ and perhaps a few other states in the union.

personally, i TRULY wonder how many TENS of MILLIONS they would happily KILL to keep the west & south under the bootheel of the racist,arrogant,anti-semetic,statist,socialist,PC,self-righteous damnyankee elites PERMANENTLY????

>>>LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS de AZATLAN<<<

That's an interesting point... Those states like leeching off of the East Coast's economic productivity though. Is it in their best interest to break away? I am quite familiar with how their territory was usurped 150 years or so ago, but it's as if the Azatlan stuff is academic idealism and gang-chanting. Perhaps I'm wrong?

Los Angeles folks held a referendum with some nearby region last month and the vote was NOT to secede. L.A. would presumably be the capital of Azatlan, too...

I saw HK Edgerton walking through Brevard, NC this morning, and stopped and shook his hand and talked to him for a while.

He was a very impressive man and it was an honor to meet him.

(Just as your proud Confederate namesake, methinks from this statement that you, too, might be the last to surrender. :)

I am green with envy, John (Edgerton is one of those rare people with whom I would give just about anything to spend an afternoon in conversation). Can you share with us anything that he said?

J.J. Johnson had a short (but very positive) article on SierraTimes about Edgerton a while ago. I initially read it only because I have tremendous respect for Johnson, but have since developed great respect for Edgerton as well.

Jesse Jackson has made a name as a black ‘leader’ through promoting class envy, inciting hatred among racial/ethnic groups, extorting racial preferences and financial bribes from big business, and lining his pockets in a (bogus) crusade for equality. Yet the mainstream media hails him as a hero. I would love to know exactly what he has sacrificed in order to deserve that distinction.

Edgerton is everything that Jackson merely claims to be (including, but not confined to, intelligent), and the mainstream media despises him. He stands (often on his own) against the rich and powerful, decries (not only in words, but by deeds) the evil elements of our society (drug dealers, violent criminals), and confronts them face-to-face in order to weed out the seamier elements of society so that the poor might have a better chance at genuine (as opposed to politically prescribed) equality.

While glibly spouting his lies or exaggerations about racial oppression and the fight for (his bigoted brand of) equality, Jackson charges an arm and a leg for speeches, travels first class, wears designer suits, and will not disclose the financial records of his Rainbow Coalition.

On the opposite end of the courage/integrity spectrum, Edgerton is not financially benefiting from his cause (as a matter of fact, he is devoting many of his own meager resources to it), is putting his own health and financial well-being on the line, and is getting down in the trenches with the poor and disadvantaged people whose cause he has taken up.

A while ago, when Edgerton publicly saluted the statue of Robert E. Lee, he completed the winning of my heart. :) -- and I know for sure that Lee would have returned the salute.

First let me say that I had no idea who HK Edgerton was prior to yesterday. I just saw this older black gentleman wearing a crusty campaign hat and carrying a Confederate flag walking along the sidewalk in the opposite direction to which we were driving. My wife apparently had read something in the local paper and thought he lived in Asheville (about 30 miles from us), which turned out to be correct.

She has a Confederate Flag (license plate) on the front of her Toyota, and traffic was moving slowly. When HK saw the license plate, he stopped, snapped to attention, and smartly saluted. We waved back. (He must have been in the military to know how to salute like he did.)

Needless to say, I was very intrigued at that point - verging on cognitive dissonance. I told my wife, "If a white man tried that, there would be a riot. The police would drag him off to jail for being a racist."

After I dropped off my wife at one place, and went back through town to where I was going, and tje man and his flag were now standing by the entrance to Brevard College, at a main intersection in town.

When we were done with all our errands, I vowed to pull into the College and stop and talk to the man. But as we headed that way, here he came walking East along Hwy 64 back toward Asheville, so I pulled (careened) across two lanes of traffic into a gas station and waited for him.

I said "Hey", introduced myself, and told him that I just wanted to meet him. He introduced himself and we shook hands. I asked him if he was walking all the way to Asheville, and he said, "No, I walked from Asheville to Texas once, but this time I have a car down the road."

I asked him what he was doing, and he said something about "showing the liberals in this town" that we are all proud of our heritage. I really can't remember his exact words - I was too shocked at hearing a black man talk about liberals that way. But he was intelligent and articulate.

At this point I was starting to get a clue that this was not just an old crazy man.

I asked him how he was received as he walked across the South, and his eyes lit up and he said, "It was glorious. Whites and blacks both responded to what I was trying to do, and agreed with me that we all have a common heritage that we need to protect"...or words to that effect. "I only had trouble in one place, where the police tried to run me out of town. The mayor fired that man the next day."

I said that the Civil War was a dark time in America's history, and HK agreed, but added it was a dark time in the history of the world. He mentioned that the blacks here in the US should thank God that they weren't still suffering in Africa.

Well that was about it. Had I known who he was, I would have walked with him a while and talked some more. I thanked him, and he thanked me for stopping to talk to him, and we shook hands again. He doffed his hat to my wife.

When I got back in the car, I had my wife write down his name (I suffer from CRS), and my thought was, "I'll bet this guy is somewhere on Free Republic.", which he was.

His hat looked like it might have been fine leather at one time. Now it looked like the bleached skin of a dead cow which had died somewhere out in the desert. It was heavily stained from sweat around the middle and down the brim, and sported a couple of those silver acorns that cavalry officers had on their hats. The hatband was missing.

You can't buy a hat like that, you have to make one with dust and your own sweat.

I would have given anything to be there, especially at that particular moment.

That says it all, John.

Thank you (more than you know) for starting my day off on an incredibly bright note. Your description of the way in which you came across him, and the interaction between the two of you, is incredible. You shook hands with a genuine American hero yesterday, and, even though you didn’t necessarily know it at the time, you gradually recognized it on your own.

Please consider posting this account as a thread of its own, maybe with a little background information on H.K., and maybe even include a little more about your hindsight reflections since meeting him. More FReepers need to read what you wrote here. The personal, one-on-one accounts, and impressions, of this kind of meeting mean so much more than the cold, second-hand facts that (of necessity) generally comprise the posts here.

Many thanks for sharing this wonderful story.

NOPE. NOT a different march.

along the way, HK & his brother (who drives the van with the sleeping bags, ice chest, food, etc.) has picked up numerous supporters, who choose to walk with him for a mile, 5 miles or for a day. a few have walked with him for 2 or more days.

ALL of us who support HK's march are volunteers/desendents of CSA veterans, who fund him out of our backpockets. (HK & brother are NOT well-to-do.)

the march across dixie is a LIVING MEMORIAL to our fallen HERO-MARTYRS. that's what it is about.

i am PROUD to call HK & his family FRIENDS.

his ancestor, like mine was a NON-white private soldier of the CSA true cause.

BOTH served from 1861 to the bitter end. both were POOR farmers, who served without expectation of anything except hardship, hunger & death. both did the best they could for dixie LIBERTY.

i, for one, am proud of all of our departed HERO-MARTYRS! ALL of them. their fidelity, devotion to duty, sacrifices & honorableness exalts them.
