"The Great Generation?"

Your congressman might say, "Madison was all wrong; after all, there's the 'general welfare' clause." Here's what Madison had to say about that: "With respect to the two words "general welfare," I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators." Thomas Jefferson echoed similar sentiments saying, "Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated."

How far removed we are from where we started out. Yes, we have made some excellent progress but, we are paying for our own destruction. See:

It all depends what the meaning of the word "is" is!

Unfortunately, Mr. Williams somewhat undermines his argument by referring to the "Great Generation" when the recently bestowed title is the "Greatest Generation".

That said, Mr. William's piece rightly questions that appellation.

In defense of that generation, they are the first to have the income tax to play with. With an admendment that essentially says "everything anybody makes belongs to the government" is it any wonder that government has broken down to nothing more than a whinning contest among looters?

The solution is a balanced budget admendment that slowly cuts federal spending until the income tax is no longer needed and is thereafter repealed.

About the only way I can see THAT happenening is if a brave candidate for president creates a contract with America that gets not only most republican congressman or candidates to sign on, but most republican statehouse members and candidates too.

The only "great" generation we've had has been that of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Adams. It's all been downhill since then.
