"Does anyone on the scene know much about this party-switching fellow? Is he at least conservative on some issues?"

He is left wing on most issues, considers himself a populist protecting "unfortunate" blacks and the poor who are victims of gentrification on the Charleston peninsula.

He sides with the GOP on vouchers and certain (unspecified) economic issues. He supported the Republican Sanford over the incumbent Dem in the most recent election for Governor.

I think one of the main reasons for switching is so that he can run against Mayor Riley (Democrat/Socialist). They are on oppisite sides of many issues but Riley has been Mayor since the late 1970's. It would be the best of both worlds for Campbell, he'll get the black vote AND the Republican vote.

Well, I'm not psyched about supporting moderate-liberal candidates, but if he can take out the Democrat mayor that would be a big plus. It would also signal to a lot of blacks that it's OK to be a Republican.

Heck, I wish we had a strong black GOP candidate for city council or county commission here in Charlotte -- he'd almost certainly be elected, and black Democrats are already realizing that other 'Rats won't vote to elect them county-wide.

Something new needs to happen. To those who don't know the area, there's a section in the Northern part of Charleston that's so run down, Hurricane Hugo actually improved it.
