THE NEW McCARTHYISM: FERRETING OUT REPUBLICAN RACISTS

by Murray Soupcoff

Trent Lott's ill-advised comments at Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party, praising Strom's Dixie-loving, civil-rights-loathing 1948 tilt at the presidential windmills, were not exactly an example of enlightened civility as far as the unintended targets of Mr. Lott's ill-chosen words were concerned. Senator Lott's apparent zeal to restore the glorious heritage of the Confederacy -- no doubt including separate drinking fountains for black folks, "colored" washrooms and stress-relieving vigilante lynchings of uppity "nigrahs" -- couldn't be expected to sit well withl the intended victims of any fantasyland Dixiecrat revival. And in this author's opinion, black Americans had every right to suspiciously wonder whether they were seeing the real Trent Lott as he ( in his own inimitable words) "winged it" on the occasion of celebrating Strom Thurmond's hundredth year on this planet.

However, now that we've got that matter out of the way, let's get right to the main focus of this rant. And that is the left-lib crowd's increasing proclivity to play the "race-card" by smearing their enemies with a dose of race-based McCarthyism. We're talking about what appears to be their life's work of ferreting out alleged "racists' in every nook and cranny of the American Republic -- but almost always in the inner sanctums of the Republican Party or the conservative opposition (white and black) to today's hairbrained "civil-rights" racial-preferences stratagems.

How far will the chattering classes go in distorting reality to discover new "right-wing racists" and black "Uncle Toms" to chastise and excommunicate from public life? Well, a recent Inside Politics column by Greg Pierce in the Washington Times reminds us what a cynical and manipulative bunch these people are. Here's how Mr. Pierce puts it:

In the upside-down world of People for the American Way, a vote for a black Supreme Court justice apparently is evidence of racism.

The liberal group, taking advantage of Sen. Trent Lott's troubles, put out a press release yesterday purporting to show that potential successors to Mr. Lott of Mississippi have voted to "undermine civil rights protections." The evidence? Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell and Oklahoma Sen. Don Nickles voted in favor of Clarence Thomas' nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1991.

That was just one of what PFAW described as "16 key civil rights votes over the past 20 years" in which the above-named Republicans almost always failed to vote the liberal way. It included such issues as racial quotas in federal contracting, in which, of course, those opposed to discrimination are deemed to be foes of civil rights.

Tennessee Sen. Bill Frist and Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum were included in the scorecard, although they could not be denounced for supporting Mr. Thomas, since they were not in the Senate at that time. However, they could be rebuked for such anti-civil rights sins as voting for John Ashcroft for attorney general.

"These dismal voting records make it clear that the Republican Party's civil rights problem is far broader and deeper than Trent Lott," PFAW President Ralph G. Neas said.

Shades of George Orwell! Defining a confirmation vote in favor of a black jurist of integrity such as Clarence Thomas as a racist act, and as part of a civil rights problem "far broader and deeper" than the Trent Lott fiasco? Gimme a break!

What have the loopy denizens of the contemporary civil-rights establishment been smoking lately? Their mission -- to eliminate any vestiges of the tolerant, color-blind society that Martin Luther King dreamed of (a dream that ironically is now closer to becoming a reality in spite of the civil-rights establishment) and replace it with an inegalitarian, race-based Orwellian nightmare of government-imposed racial quotas in education, racial gerrymandering at the ballot box, racial favoritism in federal and municipal contracting, and stigmatization any black person who makes it by virtue of his own talent and ambitious energy -- is sheer stupidity as well as race-based demagoguery...........

Lott's resignation won't pacify these cynical racebaiting witch hunters.

That's not the point. The left incessantly attacked the GOP before Lott's gaffe, and they will continue to attack us afterwards. The difference is, Lott gave them an opening for their attacks to stick, and gave his party no compelling reason to defend him, both by his long-term caving to the Dems and his kowtowing to lib positions to try and save his a**.

But now, with Lott's resignation as ML, if the Dems try to continue and attack the GOP as racists, the GOP can just ask the Dems to censure Byrd for his days in the Klan and get back to them.

Of course it won't, but they've already overplayed their hand. They are now going to face a conservative ML, who will be working with the president to advance his agenda.

But they will keep attacking on this front, and will increasingly alienate undecided white voters.

Bring it on.

Hey people should not knock McCarthy. McCarthy's biggest mistake was in UNDERESTIMATING the Communists in Government, media, and Hollywood. McCarthy was searching for the truth when it was politically incorrect to target Communists.

<< Lott's resignation won't pacify these cynical racebaiting witch hunters. >>

Nor will any of the bastards acknowledge that both Lott and Thurmond were Democrats back then.

As, for my money, the execrable KKKli'toon-appeasing Lott has always been -- and still is.

Exactly, think back to when we took the House under Clinton, every other word out of any Dems mouth was prefaced with "extremist". Same tactic, just changed the word to racist. We have been here before so I hope the Pubs learned something the last time this tactic was used. A Carville specialty.

And during the impeachment process, when it was revealed that Bob Livingston had an affair, they shouted "hypocrite". And then promptly ate those words when Livingston resigned, thereby creating a precedent that the Dems were loathe to follow. The best way to defuse Dem attacks is to act in an honorable fashion, as the concept is completely alien to the other side, and therefore it is a primary distinguishing characteristic, so to speak, of the right.

What should the president have said? A suggestion.

"Every day that America was segregated was a day that America was unfaithful to our ideals. I believe that. Sen. Lott believes that. Sen. Thurmond came to believe that. As for those who have maliciously and falsely accused Sen. Lott of a statement he never made and a sentiment he never expressed, they should stop dealing the race card from the bottom of the deck."

Lott's enemies would have scattered like the jackals they are. Now, with Bush's assist, they have horribly wounded his majority leader. Trent Lott is the victim of a hate crime, not the perpetrator of one.

Whats wrong with the 1st McCarty'ism...except for the fact he barely scratched the surface. Recent info from Soviet KGB archives have confirmed that. A couple of books have been written on it. Which Books?. If you cared you would already know which books. The ol' drunk(McCarthy) was too blasted to know what he stumbled on to, OR maybe he just could'nt handle the truth of it all.......

Which STILL has'nt even been plumbed to the depths of it all. American Communists/Socialists actually did/have all but destroyed the United States... Pity. Most don't even know that Communism "IS" Socialism(includeing Republicans)..
