Design California's Quarterr California's Quarter Design.
Gov. Gray Davis' Home Page ^ | December 2002 | Dr. Kevin Starr, State Librarian

Posted on 01/02/2003 9:23:10 PM PST by BenLurkin

Dear Californians:

As Chair of the California Quarter Committee, I am sending my thanks to Californians for their participation in the California Quarter Program. As we draw near to the much-anticipated selection of the California Quarter, it is my hope that the final design will visualize the concept of our diverse state. The generous participation of the public has made this historic program possible. From more than eight thousand submissions received between September 9, 2002 and November 9, 2002 the California Quarter Selection Committee has chosen twenty California-inspired ideas!

The twenty images posted here give Californians an opportunity to comment on the California Quarter semi-finalists. Governor Gray Davis believes that it is important to have commentary from the public to help realize this vision. We encourage you to review these California images and choose the concept that you would consider the best representation of our great state. Simply mark your preference and then click the submit button near the bottom of the page. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Kevin Starr

Voted for # 11. The sun setting into a stormy sea seemed most fitting for a state which is rapidly sinking.

I voted for #11 too. I wonder why they chose so many designs of the Golden Gate.

I can think of a few very "unPC" designs, lol! Too bad I didn't submit them.

Except for the font, that sun one would be a nice art-deco style coin, appropriate because of all the cool 1930's buildings in LA (the ones they've left standing, that is). Otherwise the John Muir or the 49er one would be good, to get a bit of the history of the state in there. Anything but a Golden Gate Bridge one (yawn).... (Being a Texan in Calif though, I'm more anxious for the Texas quarter)

And the motto can be changed to "Bankrupt since 2003".

Paul Atreides - are you there? How about whipping up some of your graphics magic?

Number 3 is the Brown bear with Half Dome in Yosemite.

I voted for number 13.

Some of those designs made one think that California got its nick name, The Golden State, from the Gold rush, which isn't true. The Golden State refers to the color of the hills, which just kills the environmentalist, who like to put green belts into developments. The only thing with a natural green in California is the Redwoods.

I know that, I was being flippant. I thought that the 'forced perspective' in the design didn't really work to my eye, it looked like an eight hundred foot tall bear terrorizing the Yosemite Valley.
