Your mean to tell me your friend would rather eat
mustard for dinner than take any job?
I may get flamed for saying it, but I do not believe that a person cannot find work. It may be a crappy low paying menial job you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy, but I'd rather shovel **** than eat mustard for dinner.

You should also check with the various Churches & Charity Assn's in the area. I'm in AZ, and St. Vincent De Paul delivers food to needy people as does the Phoenix Rescue Mission. They collect food and money from giving parishoners and the giving outside community. They can also arrange for reduced utility expenses, rent payments, etc. Your friend should accept their help and then give back to these institutions when he's back on his feet in an ongoing manner as thanks.
Wishing you the best of luck!

What kind of techie? What does he specialize in? Is he willing to relocate?

My prize?
A self-compiled Word document containing the most hilarious negative feedback comments left by eBay users.
Example:
Buyer's Complaint: "Instead of shipping the item I won, he sent me a photograph of the item I won plus two pieces of bubble gum. :( "
Seller's Response: "Bizarre, foul-mouth adolescent with intense anger + persecution complex. Psychiatric intervention needed ASAP".
I'm working on a coffee-table book which compiles nothing but (what I feel are) hysterical negative feedback comments (from eBay users). However, if it's like every single project I've ever started, it will never be completed/published.

Though he doesn't want to accept welfare I was on welfare once after an injury (I hated it myself, but had kids and they came first, got off it as soon as I was given ok by doc to work - funny thing is I would not have had to go on it had another government agency, workers comp, had been paying me as they were supposed to. Crap Happens). Your tax dollars pay for it and he might as well suck out what money he can from Uncle Sammy because once he gets back to working they will take it from him without a thought. Use the system when you need it.

He started out as an internet Tech support type, though he's done hardware service as well. Unfortunately he's not here right now to answer questions about specialization, but
I can get back to you later. He's worked everywhere from small ISPs to AOL and Gateway.
Yes, he'd be willing to relocate and would actually
probably be glad to. Right now he is in the Albuquerque area.

most bizzare, non-perishable foods they can findIt's amazing how long some things last. I have just about finished off my Y2k stash and some of those perpetual foods are not too bad. While those MRE dinner rolls are interesting, I still don't care for them. Might save those for Y3k.
You might take a look in Sharper Image or someplace like that for an interesting prize.

He's been applying for jobs left and right.

Thank you. I'll pass the idea on to him :)

Albuquerque Several call centers are hiring there (I was a tech at a call center previously and with the volume of PC's techies were always in need) and a new one just opened up (have a link here somewhere for the articles relating I posted). About 700 new jobs total in the area, some were in Moriarty but most directly in Albuquerque.
