Former Citadel Cadet From Jordan Pleads to Fraud Charges, Faces Deportation

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A former Citadel cadet from the Middle East pleaded guilty to bank fraud and possessing a document-making implement and was sentenced to time served Friday, federal prosecutors said. Yaser Khatib, 25, was turned over to the Immigration and Naturalization Service for deportation proceedings, U.S. Attorney Strom Thurmond Jr. said.

Khatib, a Jordanian citizen who was born in Saudi Arabia, was arrested in October 2001 in an immigration sweep prompted by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Authorities have said they found no link between Khatib and any terrorist group.

Thurmond said Khatib used the false identification and the name of Ibrahim Zahid in a scheme to take out dozens of loans and credit cards.

Khatib was a cadet at The Citadel when he was arrested, but was discharged from the state military college because he did not attend classes after his arrest.

Seamole: here's a posting of mine from several months ago. It looks like a few of us need to remember Strom's accomplishments in the marriage department. The picture is dated 1987 and Strom Jr is on the right.

Ha! Let none of us middle-aged guys forget that Strom, in his late 60s, married a former Miss South Carolina who was 22 at the time. Over the next few years they had four children, and the marriage has lasted, for 34 years!

The below photo is from a Clemson web page and is dated 15 years ago. A beautiful family and Strom looks 50 instead of 85. I think the eldest daughter passed away in her early 20s (do any SC Freepers have the story on that?).

Strom has some tough fiber in his body in addition to a virility that most of us could only wish to have. Must be that good southern stock.

Strom's oldest daughter was killed by a automobile driven by an intoxicated women in Columbia, SC about 8 - 10 years ago, I think.
