In the spring of 2002 photojournalist Lucian Read documented a group of Roma refugees from the war in Kosovo who had been forced to take up residence in the ruins of a retirement home on the outskirts of Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Driven from their homes in 1999 by the returning Albanian majority and the KLA (under the protection of NATO) this group and some 150,000 other Kosovar Gypsies now live in tenuous exile across the Balkans and Western Europe. Without documentation or help, Kosovos Roma are now forced to survive as best they can on the edge of the crippled societies of the former Yugoslavia. Three years after the end of the fighting, most are still far from home, with little hope of returning.
Poster's note: This is a excerpt from a photo essay. Could some tech-friendly FR's please post the most salient images from the essay ? Thks.

One more tragic outcome of liberal HumWarrior's foreign policy meddling.

I thought this was about the Hildabeast preparing for a trip to Rome, her goons shoving all the Gyspies on trains [to Naples], so she would not have to look upon lowly street people.

Bombing Serbia was the wrong thing to do at the time - rounding up former Albanian SS in Kosovo FIRST was what we should have been into. The place is overrun with war-criminals of the same kind, type and vintage as those we occasionally pick up in the US.
If this had been done first, the Serbs would have fallen into line without conflict. They needed to be shown exactly what happens to folks who engage in ethnic cleansing, even if 50 years in the past.

Don't cry too much for the Gypsies. They are surviving by picking pockets and slitting purse straps on the Paris Metro, Rome's buses and the London Tube. One had his hand almost in my right front pants pocket when my wife slapped him silly.

sure they were Gypsies and not part of the Albanian mafia ?
The Albanian mafia has taken over lots of petty (and not so petty) crime in the last few years. Destro....show us some of those links :)

The future does look brighter for these refugees whom may eventually return home to Kosovo where they lived pretty middle class lives owning detached homes and holding down pretty ordinary jobs.
Since GWB was elected, we've arrested virtually the entire KLA leadership cadre. Once the KLA is eliminated, there is hope that the Roma can live safe and prosper once again in Kosovo.
Please recall that Gypsies are the bellweather of a place's freedom and liberty.
When tyrants take over, it is always the Gypsies (and Jewish people) who get hammered first. I for one am glad that GWB is distancing himself from the discredited policies of Clinton asap.

I'm not shedding any tears for the Roma. I was nearly mugged by a group of them when I was in the Czech Republic. Luckily I had noticed they were following me, and high tailed it to the nearest sub-machine gun shouldering Czech police officer.

So, thousands should suffer because you had a bad experience with a few!

I'm not saying they should suffer. However you should understand that the Roma don't need anyone's sympathy, they make their livelihood out of being conmen and theives.

Gypsies are known for doing these sorts of crimes. But Kosovo Gypsies, unlike Gypsies elsewhere in Eastern Europe where land owners and farmers. The Kosovo Gypsies do not have a history of this kind of behavior.
