Wife sent packing for not serving chicken gizzard

By Aggrey Nshekanabo

Every Christmas is marked with merry making. But to village folks, Christmas is more than that.

In this particular case, one Pulinare of Kyakatwanga in Kyegegwa, Kyaka had bred his cock for Christmas.

On the big day, he slaughtered and cut it into pieces enough for his family of four.

At 10 O’clock, the whole family set off for prayers. After the service, while the rest of the family went home, Pulinare branched off to a nearby bar.

He made merry with other folks until 6.00p.m. He then remembered that he was supposed to have lunch with his family, so he staggered home.

At home, his brother-in-law Pauliino had visited. Unfortunately, Pauliino was served the godly gizzard.

In his drunken state, Pulinare demanded to be served, which his wife Ateenyi did while kneeling. She knew her husband well. Whenever he came home drunk, he expected her to serve him while kneeling. But the man refused to eat. There was something missing on his plate.

“Mukuru wenkoko alinkaha meaning (where is the gizzard)?” He asked.

“Mukuru, nyowe mukuru wenkoko ntagirore (I didn’t see the gizzard,) Ateenyi replied.

“Is there any cock without a gizzard? If you have served it to your lovers, you are in for big trouble.” Pulinare warned.

Pulinare then beat Ateenyi and told her to leave his home till she learnt that the gizzard belongs to the head of the family. Ateenyi ran to her mother-in-law’s house for protection.

Next morning, a meeting of arbitration was convened and Ateenyi was accused of disrespecting the power attached to the gizzard. She was told to buy another cock. As for Pulinare, he was warned never to fight over food again. Later Ateenyi was seen in Kyegegwa trading centre looking for a cock.
