North Korean ambassador asks to visit Richardson
North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations has requested permission to visit with Governor Bill Richardson in New Mexico.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer confirmed Thursday that the request had been made to Richardson, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, by the North Korean ambassador, Han Song Ryol, based in New York City.
Knowing that such a visit by an ambassador would require State Department approval, Richardson contacted Secretary of State Colin Powell about the matter.
Fleischer said Powell had no objections to the ambassador's request to visit New Mexico. When such a visit would take place was not released.
The governor's office had no comment when contacted by Eyewitness News 4 on Thursday. A spokesperson for Richardson said the governor was in meetings and discussions about the matter.
Fleischer says it isn't known what North Korea wants to say to Richardson. But he says the Bush administration expects Richardson to stick to Bush's line on the Korean nuclear crisis.
Richardson has a long history with North Korea, negotiating with the country on several occasions as a congressman.
He negotiated the release of a U.S. helicopter pilot downed in 1989 during a visit to confer nuclear disarmament. He later negotiated again with North Korea for the release of a pilot shot down in December 1994.
In 1996, Richardson successfully negotiated the release of a U.S. missionary accused by the North Koreans of spying.
Richardson was named the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations 1997.

It's a good thing the director of Los Alamos National Laboratories has just been replaced - possibly in the nick of time. Hopefully the new director has also changed the locks since old Bill was in charge up there as Secy of Energy.

SlickRich is the GREAT underreported failure of the Republicans in the last election.
The guy is a crook, a pimp, a lying walking excuse of a human being. The NMs who voted for him have again demonstrated the glories of 70 years of Dem choke hold control of the state.

With all Richardson's negatives, I thought all the Sanchez people would have to do was remind the voters of same - but Sanchez didn't really do that. He beat himself I'm thinking.

I agree. Sanchez should have gone on the attack from day one and kept going right up till election day. That's the best way to beat a weasel.
