IDF Spokesperson, Brigadier General Ruth Yaron, said in an interview on Israel's Channel 2, that Israel is ready for any possible allied attack in Iraq. Yaron emphasized that the Iraqi military capabilities have deteriorated since the Gulf War, and that if the need arose, Israel was suitably prepared. Yaron spoke of the "Arrow" missile system and the Israeli Air Force, and said that she was confident that they would both be able to protect Israel's air space.
Yaron stated that the approaching allied attack in Iraq, would not necessarily involve Israel. "If Israel is involved in the attack, we are prepared for any possibility," said Yaron.
Yaron added that if a missile was launched against Israel, the citizens would be given enough time to prepare. "It would take at least three minutes to prepare, which is ample time. At the same time the citizens would be advised to reach a protected space, or a protected shelter. From the moment the alarm is heard, we will instruct our citizens whether or not to remain in the protected space. This will be done through the media."
"Once the sirens are heard, television channels will broadcast a video tape explaining guidelines to the public. The television networks already have this tape. Following this, the IDF Spokesperson will come on the air from the Home Front Command's television studio. Military experts will be in the studio, and will provide the appropriate instructions to the public," said Yaron. She added that this past week, this very scenario was successfully exercised.
"In every parameter, Israel is the most prepared, one can take the "Arrow" missile system for example," said Brig. Gen. Yaron. Yaron added that in the event that an enemy plane makes its way to Israel, the air force would undoubtedly know how to protect Israel's skies. Today, Yaron added, we know for sure that the Iraqi capabilities are relatively lower than during the Gulf War.
Brig. Gen. Yaron stated that in the different possible scenarios many different factors might be involved. The IDF will be one factor, as will be the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "The IDF is part of the Ministry of Defense, and receives directives from it. If we do not mix and mingle between the "levels" there will be no reason for chaos, and the result will be a coordinated effort of information giving," said Yaron.
