Sons of drowned family members sue county for negligence

The surviving sons of a family that drowned in Lake Isabella last summer are suing the county.

The Bakersfield Californian reports that Jeremy and Cody Skaggs, and their grandparents, filed a claim late last month against the county. It claims the county negligently built, operated and maintained the lake.

The suit is asking for $1 million dollars per victim.

Last July, six members of the Skaggs family drowned, including four children. An autopsy revealed the two parents, Martin Skaggs and Charlotte Whittington, were under the influence of methamphetamine when they drowned.

It's just damned stupid to put a lake where some of the nation's growing population of meth users will be vacationing ...

From a story in the Bakersfield Californian-

Sheriff's officials said the drownings likely began when at least one of the girls slipped into deep water while wading on a sandbar. That prompted Martin Skaggs, who had back and leg problems, to dive into the water to rescue the girls. Whittington then reportedly went in after her husband, and was followed into the water by Travis.

An autopsy showed that Martin Skaggs and Charlotte Whittington were under the influence of methamphetamine when they drowned.

Perhaps they could sue hydrogen for irresponsibly combining with oxygen to form water. Then maybe they could sue gravity for drawing the combined hydrogen and oxygen into a basin recklessly creating the lake.

Maybe we should sue the grandparents for making children that were responsible for polluting the gene pool.

LOL...I see you beat us ALL to the punch by bombing your OWN thread. Thanks! <G>

Odds are the county will settle out of court. Counties always lose in lawsuits against greedy trial lawyers that check the news just LOOKING for a prime case like this one to take advantage of.

It's terrible about the poor kids drowning. It's the parents' fault. Unfortunately, the parents are beyond punishing by any earthly Judge.

The county shouldn't be handing out speed with the paddleboats.

"I feel the need. The need for speed..."

That is both sadly and fortunately a self-rectifying situation.

Why don't they just sue the trailer park where the meth was made?

God help us get the tort reform Bush promised.
