I have to admit that I felt some measure of anger and abandonment at Schweiker not accepting the nomination to run for a full term for PA Gov., leaving us with the laughably incompetent Mike Fisher.
For those of you not from PA, Fisher was beaten by Rendell by such a margin that the Dems didn't even need to resort to fraud.
However, upon reading this article, I can see why he decided against running for another term and he's regained my respect.
I was also surprised to see that the Inky avoided doing a rip job on a Republican, a rare feat for them.

Thanks for the ping. He really sounds like an honorable guy. Unfortunately, we're stuck with Rendell.

I sent an e-mail to Gov. Schweiker a few months ago just before the election....pretty much told him me and my family were "very uspet" he didn't run and what an honor it would be to have such an honorable man in the top seat of PA. Wished him well in the future and I got back a "quickie" response thanking me for the well wishes. It was nothing official, just one line, and I kinda think it was really from him, since aides usually type in all kinds of superfluous bs that looks official. (Kinda like what I am doing now??)
After that Que Creek Mine incident, and the way he so genuinely involved himself with the rescue and the families - keeping in mind he KNEW he was not running - it was something that was authentic and came from his heart. It wasn't just a photo op.
Maybe after his kids are grown and we get through the next (possibly) 8 years under the Rendell Coke and Cash Bash, Mark Schweiker will choose to run. He is someone who I would very proudly campaign for.
