Show Me The Money
MOVING ON UP. MoveOn is keeping its vow to target federal legislators who went after President Clinton's impeachment with its "We will remember" campaign. In the days before the June 30 FEC reporting deadline, the advocacy group solicited contributions to five candidates and raised an unprecedented $250,000 in five days through its Web site. Some 92 percent of contributions were less than $50, according to co-founders Wes Boyd and Joan Blades. "Because (online fund-raising) costs are so low, we can support low dollar amount contributions from the broadest group of ordinary citizens and actually give the contributions to candidates and not the post office. It opens a whole new source of support for candidates from ordinary people," Boyd said. Candidates who received funds are challenging incumbents who supported impeachment. In its short lifetime (the site was started last fall), some 500,000 Internet users have signed MoveOn petitions and pledged $13.4 million in support. The group has logged 750,000 volunteer hours for election of candidates in 2000.
